Men’s Soccer Clash to a Tie at RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In a battle of two of the top Liberty League teams this season, the Ithaca College men's soccer team and RIT battled to a 0-0 tie on Wednesday evening. Neither team was able to create a clear scoring chance in the first half and the same could be said with the second half and overtime periods as they combined to place just two shots on target. With one match, remaining Ithaca sit in second-place in the Liberty League with a 7-5-5 overall record and 5-1-2 mark in conference.

The Bombers began the game a bit on their heels with RIT forcing them to defend in their portion of the field. The Tigers ripped a pair of shots, neither of which was on target during the first seven minutes of play. IC settled into the game as the first 20 minutes of the first half ended up being pretty even.

Ithaca began to dominate possession and had a dangerous scoring opportunity off a free kick that was whipped into the box in the 31st minute by Drew Cohn. The scoring chance was thwarted by a defender in the box and the Bombers were unable to create a shot off the rebound.

The score remained level into the halftime break as both teams were aggressive combining for 14 fouls and three yellow cards within the first 45 minutes of play.

Senior goalkeeper Lee Folger made his first save of the night on a Bret Kaemmerlen header that was taken off cross near the corner flag at the 57:07 mark. Off another set piece opportunity following an RIT foul, the Bombers had a chance in front of the net, but Brendan Lebitsch sailed his shot attempt above the cross bar.

RIT nearly got on the scoreboard in the 76th minute when Benjamin Duby dribbled through the defensive backline of the Bombers, but his shot attempt also sailed high and above the goal frame. On a corner kick in the 85th minute Jared Gast saw his shot attempt blocked by a Tiger defender as it nearly ricocheted into the back of the net as IC was rewarded another corner kick.

The score remained deadlocked at the end of regulation forcing a golden goal overtime. Neither team was able to net the game-winner in the first 10-minute period. RIT recorded two shot attempts in the second overtime period, neither were on target as the game ended in a tie.

The five ties this season mark the most since the 2012 season as Ithaca will play on the road in its final regular season contest of the season. They will battle the current third-place team Vassar College on Saturday, October 30. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
