SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team remain unbeaten in their last six games as the team fought back from an early deficit to tie Skidmore College, 1-1 on Friday evening. The Bombers remain atop the Liberty League with a 4-0-1 mark and improved to 6-4-4 overall while Skidmore dropped to 6-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 within conference action.
Quick build-up play in the 18-yard box by the Thoroughbreds caught a few of the Ithaca defenders on their heels and they were able to make the most of it putting the ball into the back of the net. Finn Weber whipped in a cross from across the box and a one-touch shot attempt by Max Mian bested IC goalkeeper
Lee Folger at the 14:05 mark of the first half.
It was ho-hum for the remainder of the first half with the Liberty League opponents trading shot attempt opportunities. Ithaca came close to netting the equalizer in the 38
th minute, but a
Colin Shust was saved by Bobby Stratts and a
Jared Gast shot at the 43:28 mark was just wide of the goal frame.
Ithaca College had a glorious opportunity to tie the game at 58:27 when a foul in the box earned them a penalty kick chance.
Zackary Dewitt stepped up to take the kick and his attempt to the right side of the goal frame was saved by Bobby Stratts.
The equalizer for Ithaca College finally came in the 61
st minute as the Bombers earned a free kick attempt after an opponent foul in the attacking third of the field.
Ali Kapasi fired in the long crossing ball and it was headed to the right foot of
Jonathan Kyriakidis who fired the ball into the back of the net. It was the seniors' team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Bombers had another pair of scoring opportunities that were foiled by the opposing goalkeeper Bobby Stratts. The senior palmed the ball for a save against a
Christian Leach attempt in the 76
th minute and with just under three minutes remaining he saved an
Alex Cabeca attempt.
With the game going to overtime, neither team was able to notch another goal on the scoresheet. Skidmore outshot the Bombers 5-3 in the 20 minutes of overtime action.
IC will look to keep it rolling with a quick turnaround on Saturday in a road match slated against Union College. First touch against the Dutchmen is scheduled for 2 p.m.
