SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Playing in back-to-back days, the Ithaca College men's soccer team was victorious on Saturday by a 2-1 score at Union College. With the win, the Bombers improved to 7-4-4 overall and are 4-0 within the Liberty League while Union College dropped to 4-7-1 overall and 0-6 within the conference.
The Bombers got on the scoreboard first converting off a corner kick. After the ball was whipped into the 18-yard box it was settled by
Brendan Lebitsch and fed to
Drew Cohn who slashed at the ball and got just enough of it as it trickled into the bottom right corner of the net. It was scored in the 25
th minute and was the senior defenders second goal of the 2021 season.
IC kept up its pressure and a foul just outside of the box set up a free kick opportunity that allowed them to double its lead at the 31:19 mark.
Jared Gast made the most of bouncing ball that was deflected off a Dutchmen defender and fell to his feet where he then fired the ball past the opposing goalkeeper Sean Speck into the lower right corner of the net.
Ithaca College carried the 2-0 advantage into halftime. The Bombers let off the gas pedal a bit within the second half as the Dutchmen were the more dangerous of the two Liberty League opponents. IC goalkeeper
Lee Folger made all six of his saves in the final 45 minutes of play.
After several outstanding saves by Folger, Union College made it 2-1 in the 82
nd minute of play when Robbie Michalski netted his sixth goal of the season. The Bombers defense rounded back into shape to and thwarted any further comeback attempts.
Union ended up outshooting IC by a 13-12 margin, but the Bombers placed more shots on target (9-7). Ithaca also had six corner kick chances compared to the Dutchmen who had five.
Ithaca College returns to action and the friendly confines of Carp Wood Field for its final home game of the season against RPI on Saturday, October 23. Game time for the current top-2 teams within the Liberty League is slated for 2 p.m.
