No. 15/17 Football Heads to the North Country to Battle St. Lawrence

ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 15/17 Ithaca College football team concludes its two-game road swing this Saturday, October 16, as the Bombers head to St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. for a 1 p.m. Liberty League kickoff at Leckonby Stadium. IC is 5-0 on the season and St. Lawrence is 3-2 as the programs square off for the 40th time.

ALL-TIME SERIES:
Ithaca and St. Lawrence have met a total of 39 times since 1930 – Ithaca's first year as a varsity program. The Bombers own an all-time record of 32-6-1 against the Saints, including victories in each of the past 25 meetings.

The very first matchup in 1930 ended in a 0-0 tie. St. Lawrence then won four of the next six contests between 1931 and 1976, which included a 50-0 victory in 1931. IC won the next five games from 1977-81 before the Saints prevailed in 1982 and 1983. In 1984, Ithaca defeated St. Lawrence, 12-8, and have not lost since.

IC's largest margin of victory in the series was a 60-0 shutout in 1998.

WEEKLY HONORS FOR BAHAMONDE AND WINGFIELD: On October 11, the Liberty League released its weekly awards. A.J. Wingfield was selected as Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week and Nicholas Bahamonde was tabbed Special Teams Performer of the Week for their efforts during IC's 37-14 victory at Rochester on October 9.

Wingfield accounted for four touchdowns during Ithaca's victory as he threw for three touchdowns as he finished the game 26-of-33 for 310 yards. He also ran for another score as he carried the ball five times for 30 yards.

Bahamonde scored 13 points during the win as he connected on field goals from 34, 32 and 32 yards and made all four PATs. He also kicked off eight times, four of which went for touchbacks, as he averaged 57.4 yards per kick.

HOLDING STEADY IN THE NATIONAL POLLS: D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) released their weekly polls on Sunday evening and Monday afternoon. Ithaca maintained its No. 17 spot in the D3football.com poll and No. 15 in the AFCA Top 25.

NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS: The Bombers appear all over the individual and team statistical leaders in Division III heading into this weekend's game. IC ranks third in fourth down conversion percentage (81.8%), fifth in passing efficiency defense (76.9), ninth in red zone defense (50%) and 23rd in total offense (466.4 yards).

Individually, A.J. Wingfield is the nation's leader in completion percentage (75.8%), 20th in completions per game and 26th in passing efficiency. Nicholas Bahamonde ranks sixth nationally in field goals made per game as he has booted seven on the season. Anthony Robinson is 16th in passes defended and 21st in interceptions per game.

LAST TIME OUT: The Bombers improved to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Liberty League after its 37-14 win at Rochester last Saturday. Ithaca recorded 30 first downs in the win and 577 yards of offense – 337 passing, 240 rushing – to elevate its record against UR to 4-0 all-time. All four matchups have occurred since the Bombers joined the Liberty League in 2017.

The Bombers led, 14-0, after the first quarter and took 27-7 advantage into halftime. IC would score 10 more points over the third and fourth quarters to build a 30-point lead and then UR capped off the contest with a touchdown with 4:24 remaining.

SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE: The Saints are 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Liberty League. SLU has defeated Norwich (37-7), Morrisville (27-14) and Castleton (55-3) on the year, while losing to Endicott (27-14) and Union (37-7).

SLU is averaging 28.0 points per game and allow 17.6 per outing. Yardage wise, the Saints put up 169.4 on the ground and 208.8 through the air for a total of 378.2 yards per game.

Peyton Schmitt has gained 443 yards on the ground to lead the rushing attack, while Jamie Battaglia has 231 yards.

Tyler Grochot is the team's starting quarterback and has thrown for 962 yards and 11 touchdowns. On the receiving end, Sean McCormack has 20 receptions for 257 yards and two touchdowns and Andrew Murphy has 231 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, Jacob Dreisbach pacing SLU with 40 total tackles, while Kyle Frimel has 7.0 tackles for a loss of 35 yards.

UP NEXT: The Bombers return to Butterfield Stadium to host Buffalo State on October 23 for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
