ITHACA, N.Y. – Ithaca College seniors,
Garrett Callaghan and
Buzz Shirley, of the Ithaca College baseball program have been named to the Players to Watch List by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper for the upcoming 2021 season.
During the shortened 2020 campaign, which lasted just seven games before the COVID-19 pandemic brought all collegiate sports to a halt, the above listed duo was off to a torrid start to the season.
Â
Callaghan, an outfielder, was batting .448 with 13 hits, 11 runs scored, four doubles, a home run and six RBI in just 29 at bats. He was also 5-of-6 in stolen bases. Callaghan found a spot on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week after he went 7-for-10 with six runs, five RBI, three doubles and a homer over two games against Hampden-Sydney and St. Mary's (Md.).
Â
In the 2019 season, Callaghan hit .336 in 36 games played. He concluded that year with 40 hits, 33 runs, 19 RBI and eight doubles, and was named second-team all-conference.
Â
Shirley, a first baseman and pitcher, makes the list for the second time in his career. He also seemed poised for a career year last spring as he was hitting .433 in 30 at bats with 13 hits, four doubles, six RBI and two runs scored. On the mound, Shirley owned a 1.42 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched with 15 strikeouts and a .216 opponent's batting average.
The previous season, Shirley led the Bombers in average (.392) and doubles (14) and was second on the team in hits (49) en route to being named second-team all-conference.
