Men’s Tennis Drops Spring Break Opener to No. 13 Carnegie Mellon

Results (PDF)

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ithaca College men's tennis team got its Spring Break slate underway on Sunday afternoon when it kicked off play at the United States National Campus in Orlando, Florida, against 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon. Unfortunately, the tough start to the spring campaign continued for the Bombers, who struggled to get much going against the nationally-ranked Tartans in a 9-0 shutout. The loss drops IC's record to 0-3 on the year.

It was a challenging day all the way around for the Bombers against one of the nation's deepest and most talented squads. The tone was set right from the outset, as CMU earned early breaks in all three doubles match-ups en route to comfortable wins, which put Ithaca in a challenging hole from which to dig out.

The two closest battles from the doubles session came in the Top-2 matchups, both ultimately ending up as 8-3 defeats. Seniors Colten Lavery and Liam Spiegel worked hard in the first-slot matchup against Ray Boppana and Robert Levin, but struggled to generate much momentum in a loss. Senior Sam Fried and junior George Lomas played the longest match of the three, but again were only able to scratch wins in three games against CMU's second pairing of Joshua Pinckney and Raahil Doshi. The third-slot was not as close with sophomore Artem Khaybullin and first-year Max Sobel only scratching out one game in an 8-1 defeat to Jonathan Nottingham and Sam Gibson.

The singles session was slightly more fruitful for IC, but the Bombers were unable to scratch a set in any of the six matches. The closest to do so was Lomas who battled CMU's Matthew Poh in a tight 6-4 opening set that went in favor of the Tartans' netter. Poh carried the momentum into the second set, which he won more comfortably by a 6-1 margin. Both Lavery and Fried also had some okay early success with 6-3 defeats in the opening sets of their respective matches in the first and third slots; however, both seniors struggled to keep pace in the following sets. Spiegel pulled a couple of games in both sets of his 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Sam Gibson in the second-singles slot. He was the lone Bomber to win multiple games in the second set of a match-up during today's singles session.

Ithaca will be back on the courts tomorrow at noon when the Bombers face U.S. Coast Guard.
