Women’s Tennis Swept by Vassar

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team was back on the courts for the second time in less than 24 hours on Saturday when the team jumped back into the Liberty League play with a tough matchup against regionally-ranked Vassar. The Bombers struggled to contend with the talented Brewers, falling in a 9-0 sweep.

The match initially began outdoors at the Wheeler Tennis Complex. With rain holding off and the IC men's tennis team still in the process of completing its matchup against Vassar on the indoor courts, the two sides agreed to give it a go outside. Unfortunately, the rain that began as a light sprinkle and steadily picked up forced the match to be moved indoors after about 20 minutes of action. Unfortunately, the change in venues did not do much to slow the Brewers roll. Vassar swept all three doubles matches and kept the pedal down with a sweep of the singles session.

The highlights of the day came during the singles session as senior Caroline Dunn and first-year Alexandra Dyszewski turned in inspired efforts on the day. Both players took things to a third-set super-breaker with excellent comebacks; however, neither was able to finish things off in competitive defeats in the race to 10 points.

Dunn began her comeback with a fantastic finish to her second set. She was clinical in her ball placement and variety of shots in racing back to best Sarra Yekta 6-4 in the second set. The super-breaker was punch-counter-punch throughout with both players answering each other with excellent rally winners. The breaker finished with a bit of an accidental missed shot by Yekta that turned into the perfect drop shot. The ball barely cleared the net, before the backspin took it back into the net to end the clinching point in the 10-8 breaker.

Dyszewski also grew into the match as it continued into its latter stages. After dropping a competitive first set by a 6-4 margin, she battled back to take the second in a tiebreak by a 7-3 margin. IC's rookie jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the super-breaker, but Morgane Flournoy battled back to overcome the big early hole. Vassar's netter went on to win in extra points by an 11-9 margin.

Ithaca is back in action on Tuesday, April 2, when the Bombers welcome William Smith to South Hill. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
