SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team kicked off its fall season over the weekend, competing in the two-day Union College Invitational. The Bombers combined for more than 40 matches across the event.
The weekend served as a strong test for a squad featuring five newcomers:
Lillian Caccamo,
Zuri Freeman,
Avery Greher,
Anna Harbin and
Julia Huff.
Freeman had a stellar outing in her first collegiate competition, battling her way to the Flight C finals. She defeated SUNY New Paltz's Lula Brown-Vann in the qualifying round (6-3, 6-0) and St. Lawrence's Calle Perrin in the semifinals (6-4, 3-6, 1-0) before falling to SUNY New Paltz's Angelica Gabriel in the championship match (6-3, 7-5).
Alys Pop finished fifth in the Flight B consolation bracket, defeating Ariane Karera, 8-4.
Madeleine Sutro earned a podium finish in the Flight C consolation bracket, defeating Union's Ava Boncordo, 8-5.
Ava Casell-Lapetina finished fourth in the Flight D consolation bracket following an 8-3 loss to Perrin.
In doubles play, Casell-Lapetina and Pop placed fifth after their opponents defaulted.
Freeman and Sutro teamed up for a third-place finish, defeating Eva DeJesus and Delphine Larosiliere, 8-3.
The Bombers will travel to William Smith next weekend, Sept. 12-13, to compete in the Mary Hoskins Invitational.
