No. 12 Wrestling Tied for Seventh Through Opening Day of New Standard Corporation Invitational

Results

YORK, Pa. – The 12th-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team was back on the mat for the penultimate event of the first semester on Friday evening when the Bombers traveled to York College for the 11th Annual New Standard Corporation Invitational. It was a solid opening day for Ithaca, as the squad emerged from the first day of competition in a tie for seventh-place in the highly competitive field, amassing 21.0 team points during the first day of competition.

Ithaca sits in solid position to add significant points to its ledger during the second day of competition on Saturday. The Bombers had 10-of-13 entries qualify for Saturday with six still alive in championship brackets and four additional grapplers in various wrestle-backs. Overall, IC is tied for the sixth-most grapplers still alive heading into Saturday.

No. 11 TCNJ paces the field through Friday's action. The Lions amassed 47.0 team points and have 18 wrestlers still alive in the competition. No. 5 Johnson & Wales is in second with 43.0 team points. The rest of the Top-5 includes: No. 22 Stevens (3rd, 34.0 PTS), Roger Williams (4th, 29.0 PTS), and York (Pa.) (5th, 28.5 PTS). Johns Hopkins sits in sixth-place with 25.5 team points, while IC is in a four-way tie with No. 23 Brockport, Elizabethtown, and Ursinus behind the top group.

Headlining Friday's action for the Bombers was the performance of six IC grapplers who went undefeated. Ithaca's group of wrestlers who will be in Quarterfinal Round bouts to begin Saturday's action are: Logan Ninos (125 LB), Travis Jones (10th NWCA) (133 LB), Adam Wagner (165 LB), Austin Whitney (8th NWCA) (165 LB), Jordan Wallace (7th NWCA | 9th d3wrestle.com) (174 LB), and Dalton Elias (HWT). This group combined to post an 8-0 record on Friday – Ninos and Jones each posting two victories and the other four winning their lone matches of the day.

Ninos got the day started with an impressive performance, notching one of Ithaca's seven total team pins on Friday. He bested York's Axel Giron with a second-period fall (4:54), before punching a Quarterfinal Round spot with a 9-5 decision over Stevens' Akhil Vega.

First-year Travis Jones was once-again highly impressive in another dominant outing. He won both of his bouts with falls on Friday, taking SUNY Cortland's Vinnie Santilli to his back at 2:44 and dropping Ursinus' Ray Calderalo in the third-period (5:30).

Both of Ithaca's 165-pound entrants also racked up bonus points in earning victories. First-year Adam Wagner pinned Taylor Shay of Roger Williams just before the end of regulation (6:50), while redshirt-senior Austin Whitney made quick work of York's Jake Hipps in the opening period (1:26).

Wallace and Elias earned workmanlike wins in the higher weights. Seeing his first action in nearly a month, Wallace grinded out an 11-7 decision win over Max Sims of Merchant Marine. Elias turned in a tactical effort in besting Pter Cortapasso of Apprentice School by a 5-1 decision.

Ithaca's group of consolation round survivors includes: Matt Griffin (125 LB), Luis Hernandez (133 LB), Brecan Saul (141 LB), and Adrian Rosario-Beato (149 LB). All four grapplers dropped their first bouts of the day, but rallied to earn a victory in the first set of wrestle-back rounds to advance to Saturday. Griffin and Rosario-Beato posted convincing wins, each notching pins in their second bouts of the day. Griffin pinned Stevens' Akhil Vega in the first-period (2:02), while Rosario-Beato dispatched Thomas Allison of Apprentice in the second-period (4:24). Both Saul and Hernandez earned decisions – Saul beating Ursinus' Brandon Miller in a 7-4 decision and Hernandez rolling past Roger Williams' Sean Wleck by a 9-6 margin.
