No. 12 Wrestling Closes Semester With Dual Victories Over Oswego State, Jamestown CC

Jamestown Results (PDF) | Oswego Results (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. – The 12th-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team was in action inside the Hill Center's Ben Light Gymnasium for the final time this semester when the Bombers played host to a tri-meet with Oswego State and Jamestown Community College on Saturday afternoon. The Bombers were impressive in both outings, earning convincing triumphs over both the Lakers (34-10) and Jayhawks (47-0) to close out the calendar year of 2019 on a high note. The two victories improves Ithaca's record to 4-2 in duals this season.

The Bombers were impressive throughout the lineup, earning wins in 15-of-16 wrestled bouts on the day. Additionally, Ithaca went a perfect 4-for-4 in exhibition bouts across the two duals. Of those 15 triumphs in official dual action, 11 came with bonus points. IC registered four major decisions, four technical falls, and three falls on the afternoon.

Ithaca began the day with a dual against its JUCO counterpart in Jamestown Community College. The Bombers were sharp from the outset and never gave the Jayhawks an inch of space in rolling to a dominant shutout win.

First-year Brecan Saul set the tone in his exhibition bout, locking in a pin just 1:08 into proceedings. The momentum carried right into sophore Matt Griffin's opening 125-pound bout against So Murata. Griffin pushed the pace early, scoring two takedowns and tacking on two-point and four-point near falls to stretch the edge to 10-1. The second-year talent made good on his third tilt, locking in the pin at 2:23. A subsequent forfeit at 133-pounds upped Ithaca's lead to 12-0.

The youthful theme continued at 141-pounds, as first-year Travis Jones (10th NWCA) made the jump up a weight-class to face Jamestown's Colten Studley. Much like Griffin, Jones came out aggressive, racking up takedowns and near-falls in quick succession to explode out to a 16-4 lead through the opening period. It did not take long for Jones to close things out in the second, posting three more takedowns to secure the 23-7 technical fall and a 17-0 lead.

First-year Matthew Beyer kept the momentum right on rolling in the 149-pound bout against Joey Perry. He racked up an early takedown and turned Perry to his back just 1:35 into the opening period. Sophomore Colin Murphy followed with a workmanlike 12-2 major decision over Seth MacTavish to lift Ithaca to a 27-0 edge at the midway point.

Ithaca came out on top in all four wrestled bouts in the higher weights. Junior Adam Wagner wrestled up a weight at 174-pound, but looked no worse for wear in rolling to a first-period technical fall 21-5 over Jesse Storch. Junior Jordan Wallace also bumped up a class to take-on Jamestown's Dan Torres. It was tight during the early stretches of the match, but Wallace used his strength and unlimited engine to wear down the Jayhawks grappler. He steadily stretched out the lead, locking in a late four-point near-fall to secure the 15-2 major decision. Senior Dalton Elias capped the day in impressive fashion, nearly turning Jamestown rookie Max Wills to his back several times, before ultimately settling for a 21-5 technical fall.

EX. Adrian Rosario-Beato (Ithaca) def. Logan McGloine (Oswego) | FALL: 5:26

The Bombers returned to the mats for the final dual of the day, but certainly did not look to be slowed down by the brief intermission between the two contests. IC kept right on rolling against its ECWC rival, easily surging past the Lakers for a 34-10 victory.

Again the tone was set during the exhibition session, as rookies Luis Hernandez, Brecan Saul and Adrian Rosario-Beato each notched a bonus-point win. Rosario-Beato capped the pre-match session with a thrilling pin of Logan McGloine to turn around what had been a close battle.

Griffin again got the official match started and once-again looked impressive in a strong victory over Oswego's John DeConno. Taking an aggressive approach, Griffin jumped on top with a takedown and first-period ride out that certainly looked to tire out DeConno as the bout continued. Starting neutral to begin the second, Griffin again connected on a shot for two more points, while the IC sophomore tilted DeConno for two more near-fall points to take a 6-0 advantage to the final period. Although Griffin conceded a late takedown, he had built more than enough lead to secure an 8-3 decision and early 3-0 lead for the Bombers.

Perhaps the most thrilling match of the session came at 133-pounds, as sophomore Logan Ninos jumped up a weight to face Oswego's Kaleb Carreon. It was a thrilling comeback for the IC grappler, who was nearly pinned in the opening period, but was able to survive to the horn. Despite staring at a big 6-0 hole, Ninos did not back down and began to chip away. The first point came by penalty on a hands to the face call, but Ninos clawed back into things with a late reversal and then a four-point near-fall to surge ahead 7-6 at the end of the second period. Ninos went on to add a takedown in the third period and rode out the session to take a 9-6 win.

Ithaca's pair of impressive rookies in Jones and Beyer widened out the team score margin with two more excellent outings. Jones once-again faced little resistance, rolling past Oswego's Kian Pacheco for a 21-5 technical fall. Beyer was also sharp, conceding just two escapes in a 13-2 major decision. The two wins upped Ithaca's lead to 15-0.

The Lakers lone bright spot of the day came at 157-pounds with Christian Gramuglia picking up a 10-2 major decision over Ithaca's Colin Murphy. The bout was closer than the final score might indicate, as Murphy got in on a single-leg on a couple different situations, but was unable to close out a takedown in either instance. The Oswego win did not spark a run though, as the two sides traded forfeits with Wagner receiving one at 165-pounds and Aidan Mathews picking up six points for the Lakers at 197-pounds. Ithaca went into the final three bouts of the day needing just one more win to lock-in a victory.

The clinching win would be delivered by redshirt-senior Austin Whitney, who made the jump up to 174-pounds to face Isaac Mathews. It was an auspicious start for the reigning IC All-American, as Mathews earned the bout's first takedown, while it looked as though Whitney may have tweaked his shoulder late in the opening period. Whitney showed his grit to stick with things, earning an escape and then using a nice swim move to score a late takedown to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the opening period. Whitney picked up an escape to gain a little separation in the second and used a third-period ride out to take a 5-2 win.

Wallace and Elias put the exclamation point on the day with two dominant efforts. Wallace scored at will against Colby Harblin in the 184-pound bout, earning multiple takedowns in each of the first two periods to build a massive lead. He looked a couple times to have a pin and at minimum potential near-fall points in his sights, but had to settle for a 16-3 major decision. Elias made quick work of Chris Serafini in the final bout of the day. He tossed Serafini aside for an early takedown and overpowered the Oswego State rookie, rolling him up in a cradle and putting the Laker to his back 1:51 into the bout.
