ITHACA, N.Y. – The 14^th-ranked Ithaca College wrestling got its 79^th varsity season underway on Friday when the Bombers took to the mats inside the Athletics & Events Center's Glazer Arena for the 36^th Annual Ithaca Invitational. It was a strong opening day for IC, as the hosts sit in third-place out of the 14-team field with 50.0 team points heading into the final day of action on Saturday.
 
In what has annually been one of the premiere tournaments of the opening weekend for NCAA Division III yesterday, Friday's action certainly did not fail to live up to that billing. Some of the top programs throughout the Northeast and Midwest converged on Ithaca's South Hill for nearly eight hours of opening-day competition. It was Johnson & Wales (R.I.) that emerged out of the first day with the slight lead, as the Wildcats amassed 57.5 points to enter Saturday with a 6.5-point lead on the rest of the field. No. 8 Baldwin Wallace sits in second-place with 51.0 team points, while the Bombers are right behind in third-place with 50.0-points, well within striking range. It should be noted that Johnson & Wales did have significantly more entries compared to the field, as 43 Wildcat grapplers were entered into the tournament compared to just 24 for Baldwin Wallace and 26 for the Bombers. Rounding out the Top-5 were Castleton in fourth (46.0-points) and NYU in fifth (40.5-points).
 
The remainder of the field went as follows: Western New England (6^th, 33.5), Oswwego State (7^th, 32.0), Springfield (8^th, 30.5), No. 12 RIT (9^th, 28.0), Norwich (10^th, 26.5), New England (11^th, 25.5), Otterbien (12^th, 25.0), Greensboro (13^th, 21.0), and American International (14^th, 12.0).
 
It was a strong opening day as far as the Bombers were concerned. Of Ithaca's 26 total entries, 22 IC grapplers secured at least one team point on Friday. Ithaca had 11 grapplers emerge out of the day in the championship bracket, earning berths into tomorrow morning's Quarterfinal Round. Additionally, the Bombers have eight grapplers who are still alive in the wrestle-back portion of the bracket, which will also begin in the Round of 16 on Saturday morning.
 
Headlining the day for IC were the 11 grapplers who were unscathed through the opening day of competition. The lightweight divisions produced five of those undefeated grapplers, as 125-pounder Logan Ninos and Matthew Griffin, as well as 133-pounders Travis Jones, Tito Colom and Luis Hernandez each posted a pair of victories on Friday. Also advancing to Saturday in the championship bracket were: Ben Brisman (141), Adrian Rosario-Beato (149), Sam Schneider (157), Jordan Wallace (174), Eze Chukwuezi (184), and Dymir Davis-Carruth (197). Notably, Brisman (3^rd NWCA, 5^th d3wrestle.com) was the lone IC grappler to not see action on Friday, as he earned a bye, before receiving a medical forfeit win from New England's Orlando Rojas in the Round of 16. Schneider (8^th NWCA) also had a celebrated return to the competition mat after a nearly 20-month absence from injury, as the redshirt-sophomore earned a pair of dominant technical fall victories on the day.
