Women’s Tennis Drops Finale to Connecticut College 8-1

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis concluded the 2017-18 regular season on Sunday morning when hosted its final match of the year indoors at the Athletic & Events Center's Glazer Arena against Connecticut College. Unfortunately, the Bombers were unable to finish the season on a winning note, falling to the Camels in an 8-1 final. Ithaca ends the year with a 4-11 mark.

Following the conclusion of the match the Bombers honored the two graduating members of the graduating Class of 2018 in senior Sam Brown and junior Taylor Ginestro, as well as men's tennis senior Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos. A heartfelt presentation by head coach Bill Austin was highlighted by each player getting a framed uniform, while the player's family members joined the graduates on the court to end the ceremony.

It was a competitive start to the match for the Bombers, as the team hung tough against the challenging NESCAC foe during the doubles session. All three of the matchups were slim margins, with Connecticut College taking the narrow 2-1 advantage out of the session.

The Camels struck for the first team point in the match at third-doubles. The visitors duo of Meredith Kenny and Brinley Bartlett were able to score an early break to gain some separation and maintained the edge throughout to beat IC's grouping of junior Hannah Kasoff and Taylor Ginestro in an 8-4 final. However, the Bombers battled back with a win in the second-doubles matchup quickly after. Sophomore Brianna Ruback and freshman Sara Steinberg continued their strong play as a new combo in recent weeks, defeating Aleksandra Drljaca and Stephanie Simon 8-5.

It was Connecticut College that would take the momentum-swinging bout at first-doubles. The Warren sisters were able to pull away late to defeat IC juniors Kathryn Shaffer and Caroline Dunn 8-5.

Sadly, Ithaca was not able to rebound once singles play began, as IC came up short in all six flights. The closest battles for the Bombers came at first-singles and third-singles.

Ruback took Drljaca to a tiebreaker in the first set of her first-singles matchup. Ultimately, she came up shy in the battle to concede the opening set 6-7 (2-7). Drljaca used the momentum to push the pace in the second set, not allowing Ruback to get much going in an 0-6 defeat.

Dunn was the lone Ithaca player to go the distance in her third-singles matchup against Stephanie Simon. Although the IC junior dropped the opening set 1-6, she rallied for a 6-4 triumph in the second frame to force a decisive third-set super-breaker. In the race to 10, Dunn and Simon answered each other early, before Simon was eventually to gain a bit of separation to take the super-breaker 10-7.

Ginestro and Steinberg each posted strong bounce-back efforts in the second sets of their respective matches at fourth-singles and fifth-singles. Sadly each came up just shy of forcing a third-set. Ginestro fell to Angelica Warren 1-6, 4-6, while Steinberg lost to Rachel Weiss 0-6, 4-6.

Also playing on the day was Shaffer at second-singles and Hannan at sixth-singles. Shaffer lost to Emily Migliorini 1-6, 0-6, while Hannan dropped her matchup to Haley Zukerberg 0-6, 0-6.
