The Herons set the tone for the match with a strong doubles session that put the home side up 2-1 heading into singles. William Smith swung the momentum with a hard-fought close win in the first-singles matchup, as Michaelann Denton and Dina Rigas defeated IC's top duo of juniors
Kathryn Shaffer and
Caroline Dunn. The Bombers grouping came up just short in an 8-6 loss that gave William Smith a 2-0 lead in the match. Although the Bombers rallied for a 9-7 tiebreaker win in the second tandem, as sophomore
Brianna Ruback and junior
Taylor Ginestro took home their second consecutive decision of the spring, the team was never able to recover in singles play.
The Herons took home all six singles bouts to pull away for the comfortable win. The closest battle came in the second flight, as William Smith's Denton narrowly edged Shaffer in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Freshman
Sara Steinberg was able to score three games in her fifth-singles match against Dina Rigas, but the Herons' netter was able to pull away in the second set for a 6-1 win in the second frame.
Dunn fell 6-1, 6-3 in her third-singles bout against Kate Foley, while Ruback and Ginestro also fell in straight sets by 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2 scores, respectively. Freshman
Parley Hannan was the last bout to conclude on the evening, but unfortunately she was unable to build on her first collegiate victory this past Sunday. The rookie fell in a matchup against Alex Greenberg.
Ithaca returns to action next week when it plays a trio of matches on its spring break trip to the USTA National Headquarters in Orlando, Fla. The Bombers will face Stevens, Franklin & Marshall and Bloomsburg on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
