Women’s Tennis Swept by Skidmore 9-0

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis returned to the friendly confines of Glazer Arena inside the Athletics & Events Center on Saturday afternoon when it jumped back into Liberty League play against league-leading Skidmore. Unfortunately, the Bombers could get little going against the talented Skidmore squad, falling in a 9-0 sweep. The loss drops the Bombers record to 2-5 on the year and 1-3 in Liberty League action.

The day actually began with a competitive doubles session that was an encouraging start for Ithaca. IC hung tough with the Thoroughbreds in both the first-doubles and second-doubles matchups. Sadly, the strong play did not translate to results in the team score, as Skidmore took a commanding 3-0 lead out of the opening session.

Skidmore kicked off the team scoring in the third-doubles matchup. Rookies Sara Steinberg and Parley Hannan struggled to get anything going against Alexa Goldberg and Jessica Ampel, with the Bombers falling in an 8-0 sweep.

The top two tandems were much closer. Ithaca's strongest grouping had been in the second tandem as sophomore Brianna Ruback and junior Taylor Ginestro entered the day on a five-match winning streak as a pair. They hung around against Michelle Fuca and Renee Karchere-Sun, but ultimately could not keep pace, falling 8-4. The Thoroughbreds locked-in the commanding 3-0 lead shortly thereafter with Ada Wiggins and Risa Fukushige outlasting IC's junior duo of Kathryn Shaffer and Caroline Dunn at first-doubles.

Skidmore snuffed out any hope of a dramatic Ithaca comeback early in the singles session. Ithaca ensured that they would not be closed out with scoring at least one game. All six competitors posted at least one win in a game, but none of the matches were genuinely close.
