CANTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team was back on the road on Sunday morning when it took on St. Lawrence in the Bombers inaugural match as a Liberty League affiliate. Unfortunately, it was a tough start to the new league for the IC women, as the team fell to the Saints 8-1.
Doubles play continued to be a thorn in the side of the Bombers during the early portion of this season. The Saints took all three doubles flights to score a big lead heading into singles play. IC struggled to keep things close in any of the three matchups.
Kathryn Shaffer and
Caroline Dunn fell in an 8-3 decision to Emily Wyman and Lia Petersen. The second flight followed the same blueprint with
Brianna Ruback and
Taylor Ginestro also losing 8-3 to St. Lawrence's Katherine Apt and Caroline Reilly. The first tandem flight to finish was the third with
Sara Steinberg and team newcomer Parley Hannan falling in an 8-2 decision.
There were a few highlights for the Bombers in the singles portion of play. Sophomore
Brianna Ruback scored the team's lone win of the day, taking a 6-1, 6-3 dominant straight-sets win over Emily Wyman in the top flight. Junior
Kathryn Shaffer also forced a third-set in her second-flight match against Lia Petersen. Although the IC third-year dropped the opening set 7-5, she responded an impressive 6-1 victory in the second frame. The third set was played as a superbreaker with the match already decided. Petersen took the exciting exchange 13-11.
