SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's tennis team kicked off its final action of the fall non-traditional season on Saturday when it sent four entrants to Skidmore College for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals. The Bombers had to qualifiers in the singles draw in junior
Sam McGrath and sophomore
Minos Stavrakas. IC also had one tandem in the doubles draw, as senior
Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos hit the court with sophomore
Liam Spiegel.
Â
Highlighting the day's action was the performance of its sophomore standout
Minos Stavrakas. The Greek International won both of his singles bouts on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played on Sunday morning. McGrath and IC's doubles tandem both fell in their opening matches today and will compete in the consolation ladder tomorrow afternoon.
Â
With cool temperatures and damp weather settling into the New York region over the past 48 hours, play was delayed during the morning session and eventually moved to the indoor courts at the Wilton YMCA. The shift in venues did little to slow down Stavrakas, who posted a dominant opening round win. He was clinical against Ramapo's Adam Patrovics, scoring three breaks in taking the opening set 6-1. He continued to strong play in the second set, winning 6-2 to advance to the second round.
Â
Stavrakas' strong play continued against a familiar opponent in Matt Puig of TCNJ. While Puig has bested Stavrakas in the past, the sophomore standout outlasted the talented TCNJ netter, scoring another straight-sets win 6-3, 6-4.
Â
Stavrakas will face the fifth overall seed in the draw tomorrow morning when he takes on Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez of Liberty League rival RPI. The match is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
Â
McGrath dropped his opening round singles bout to RPI's Brian Niguidula by a 6-1, 6-5 final. The junior netter showed excellent resolve in the match, rebounding from a tough opening set to nearly push matters to a decisive third set.
Â
In Ithaca's lone doubles bout of the day, Viguie-Ramos and Spiegel dropped a tightly contested pro-set to Eric Tecce and Leo Romanetz of St. Lawrence 8-4. McGrath and the IC doubles tandem will await their consolation matchups tomorrow.
