Women’s Tennis Snaps Skid, Beats Colby-Sawyer and Bloomsburg

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team got back on track on Thursday when it concluded the competition portion of its spring break trip to Orlando, Fla., with a pair of victories over Colby-Sawyer College and Bloomsburg University at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus. The Bombers beat Colby-Sawyer by a 6-3 margin during the afternoon session, while they took down Bloomsburg 7-2 during the night. The wins snapped a three-game slide to begin the team's non-traditional spring season.

Ithaca kicked off the day by snapping its three-game losing streak to begin the spring campaign when it took down Colby-Sawyer in a 6-3 final. The win improved IC's record to 11-3 on the year.
 
It was a tough start for the Bombers. Although Haley Kusak and Caroline Dunn began tandems action with an 8-1 whitewashing of Ashley Woodside and Michelle Lopes, the Chargers went on to win the second and third flights to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
 
Despite the slight advantage, the Bombers roared back during the second session, taking five of six flights in singles to secure the victory.
 
Jane Alkhazov leveled the match at 2-2 when she scored a straight-sets 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Hilary Boucher in the sixth flight. Kusak followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Woodside to give IC its second lead of the match at 3-2.
 
The Bombers sealed the match with victories in the second and third flights. Caroline Dunn won a three-setter against Aislinn O'Connor, scoring IC's fourth point after a 10-1 triumph in the third-set super breaker. Brianna Ruback clinched the match for Ithaca with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Evelyn Miller in the second flight.
 
Taylor Ginestro added a victory for Ithaca with a three-set triumph over Christine Hill. After falling behind one-set-to-none, Ginestro rallied to win the second set in the tiebreak, before taking the decisive third set in a 10-3 super breaker.

The Bombers carried the momentum from their afternoon win into the evening when it took on NCAA Division II foe Bloomsburg. Ithaca took 2-of-3 doubles flights and 5-of-6 singles matchups in the 7-2 victory.
 
The two sides split the first two tandems flights to finish. Ruback and Jodi Grosberg scored the first team point of the match with an 8-2 triumph over Catherine Garrity and Siena Cerra in the middle flight. Wentz and Schmitt answered back for the Huskies with an 8-4 victory over Ithaca's Hannah Kasoff and Taylor Ginestro.
 
Kusak and Dunn reestablished the IC lead for good with an 8-6 win over Cassidy Calimer and Vitoria Nery. Ithaca took a 2-1 advantage into singles play.
 
IC's senior standout widened the gap rather quickly with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Nery in the top flight. Taylor Ginestro tacked on another point for IC with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Chloe Berridge, while Alkhazov put Bloomsburg on the brink of the defeat with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph in the sixth flight.
 
Ithaca clinched the match in the second flight, as Ruback also earned a shutout 6-0, 6-0 win over Cassidy Calimer. Grosberg added a win for good measure in the fourth flight with a three-set victory over Cassandra Wentz. The IC senior won the match with a 10-5 super break third-set victory.
 
The IC women return to action on Friday, March 31, with a 3:30 p.m. battle against New Paltz in Ithaca.
