ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team embarked on its non-conference spring schedule on Saturday when it welcomed St. Lawrence University to the indoor courts at Glazer Arena inside the Athletics & Events Center. The Bombers suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Saints 7-2.
It was a tough start for the IC women, as the Saints swept all three of the doubles tandems to take a big advantage into the singles session. Senior
Jodi Grosberg and sophomore
Hannah Kasoff fell to Katherin Apt and Lia Peterson 8-3 in the third flight. Senior
Haley Kusak and sophomore
Caroline Dunn suffered a similar 8-3 fate in the top-flight match against Georgia Comber and Alexandra Dadoly.
The closest doubles match came in the second flight as freshman
Brianna Ruback and sophomore
Taylor Ginestro locked in a heated clash with Hallie Young and Emily Wyman. Unfortunately, it was the Saints tandem to prevail in the end, taking the decisive point in a five-point breaker.
It looked as though a comeback was in the cards for Ithaca during the early portion of singles play. All four of IC's netters took the opening set in the first-through-fourth flights. However, the Saints answered back with comebacks in the third and fourth flights to stymie the Bombers' momentum.
Ithaca's lone victories of the day came in the first two singles flights. Kusak defeated Comber 6-1, 6-2 in the top-flight, while Ruback also earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Young in the second flight. The wins upped their records to 14-2 and 13-2, respectively, in singles matches this season.
Ithaca returns to action on Sunday, March 5, when the Bombers host William Smith in a match scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
