ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team topped Cortland, 78-58, on Tuesday evening at Ben Light Gymnasium.
Three Bombers' scored in double figures, led by
Annie Giannone with 11 points.
Meghan Pickell and
Sara Jackson each scored 10 points in the win, which now puts IC at 4-1 on the season.
Ithaca jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game behind four points from first-year
Cassidy O'Malley.
Cortland's Shelby Dugan put the Red Dragons on the board on a fast break layup at the 4:27 mark.
Giannone scored her first of three from behind the arc to put the Bombers up 13-3 before draining another just over a minute later, with 2:05 left in the first quarter. The second triple put IC up 16-8.
Cortland closed the gap to five points following a three-point play from Justine Crespo, but Jackson came down the floor and drained a three to put the Bombers up eight – 19-11 – to end the first quarter.
The two teams started the second quarter by exchanging points for several minutes, before the Bombers broke the score open, starting with a
Meghan Mazzella three-pointer at the 6:42 mark.
A steal by Giannone led to a Pickell layup, putting IC up 10 points. Giannone connected on her third three of the game with 5:43 left in the half to give the Bombers a 13-point lead.
With just 10 seconds left in the second quarter, Ithaca took its biggest lead of the game so far – 15 points – on a three from first-year
Megan Yawman, to head into the half up 42-27.
The Bombers continued to build their lead in the third quarter going up by as many as 29 points.
An
Allie Tunick started Ithaca's run in the third quarter, netting a three-pointer at the 6:34 mark to put the team up 18 points.
Allison Spaschak drained a three-pointer with 2:54 left in the quarter to give the Bombers' the 61-39 advantage.
The Bombers scored the last seven points of the quarter on a layup and a three from Jackson as well as a Giannone fast break, to head into the final 10 minutes with a 29-point, 68-39 lead.
Ithaca took its largest lead of the game in the fourth, gaining a 32-point advantage on a
Grace Cannon jumper with 6:55 left to play.
Cortland started to chip away at the Bombers' lead, starting with a Kristy Vitucci three-pointer, but could not cut the deficit to less than 18 points. Becca Krenzer brought the gap to 18 with just 1:16 left to play.
First-year
Mariyah Byrd sank a jumper in the final minute to push the Bombers' lead back up to 20 points, which would hold until the final buzzer.
In addition to the three Bombers' in double figures, both Field and O'Malley netted nine points. The duo also combined for five blocks, with Field recording three and O'Malley, two.
The Bombers shot 12-34 from behind the arc, good for a 35.3 percent clip.
Cortland was led by Kerry McHugh, who scored 18 points on the day, including five three-pointers.
Ithaca is back in action on the road this weekend, Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2. The Bombers travel to Vassar on Friday at 6 p.m. before heading to Bard on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip.
