Women’s Tennis Faces Houghton on Tuesday

Match Info
Ithaca (4-0, 4-0 E8) vs. Houghton (2-3, 1-3 E8)
Tuesday, September 20, 2016 | 4:00 P.M.
Wheeler Tennis Courts – Ithaca, N.Y.

Last Time Out
Ithaca improved its record to 4-0 in dual matches on the year with another commanding 9-0 sweep over Empire 8 foe, Alfred University, on Sunday afternoon. The win upped the program's record to 2-0 at the Wheeler Tennis Courts this season, while it was the third consecutive 9-0 victory for the Bombers through the early portion of 2016.

Closing In On 200
With Ithaca's 9-0 victory over Alfred on Sunday, head coach, Bill Austin, inched closer to another milestone in his impeccable coaching career. The win was his 197th as head of the women's program at Ithaca, moving within three wins of the 200-mark.

Unbeatable at Home
The Bombers have been a juggernaut against conference competition in its home venue during Austin's tenure. Dating back to the 2004-05 season, Ithaca has posted a perfect 40-0 record in regular-season E8 matches at its traditional home venues at the Wheeler Tennis Courts and the indoor courts at Glazer Arena.

Shaffer Caps Dominating Week
Second-year netter, Kathryn Shaffer, completed an excellent week with another fine showing against the Saxons on Sunday. She teamed with senior, Maddie Overholt, for an 8-2 victory in third-flight doubles, before rolling Alfred's Inda Gillett in straight-sets 6-0, 6-0. The victories capped a 4-0 week for the sophomore, who also won her singles match against Elmira, 6-0, 6-0. Shaffer's position in the flight lists speaks to the depth Ithaca possesses this season.

Scouting Houghton
The Highlanders enter Tuesday's matchup with a 2-3 overall record and a 1-3 mark within Empire 8 play. After a season-opening loss to St. John Fisher, Houghton rattled off consecutive wins over Elmira and Pitt-Bradford. However, the Highlanders have dropped its last two matches against Hartwick and Stevens 8-1 and 9-0, respectively.

Looking Ahead
The Bombers return to action this weekend when selected players will compete at the ITA Regionals, which are to be played from Saturday, September 24, through Monday, September 26, at William Smith College.
