GENEVA,  N.Y.— The Ithaca College women's tennis team traveled to Geneva, N.Y. for a pair of non-conference clashes, and the Bombers earned a split on the day.
Ithaca (12-2) suffered a 6-3 loss to host William Smith before blanking RIT 9-0 in the second match of the day inside the Bristol Field House.
In the match with the Herons, Ithaca claimed points at third, fourth, and fifth singles but dropped all three doubles matches.
Freshmen
Shayna Ginster and
Kathryn Shaffer each earned three-set wins, while senior
Marni Blumenthal secured a straight-sets win to provide the Bombers with their three points.
At third singles, Ginster won the first set against Alex Greenberg, 6-1, but dropped the second, 6-3. She earned the point thanks to a 10-5 win in the decisive third set.
In the fourth flight, Blumenthal breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Connie Froass, while at fifth singles, Shaffer won the first set, 7-5, but dropped a 6-0 decision in the second. Shaffer rebounded with a 10-6 win in the decisive third set to earn the point.
Junior
Haley Kusak dropped a 6-1, 6-1 setback at first singles, freshman
Caroline Dunn fell 6-2, 6-1 at second singles, and junior
Jodi Grosberg lost 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at sixth singles.
In doubles play, the closest match vs. the Herons came at the third flight. Blumenthal and junior
Maddie Overholt dropped a tough 9-7 decision to Froass and Alex Cattie.
Kusak and Ginster dropped an 8-2 decision to Hannah More and Michaelann Deton at first doubles, while Dunn and Shaffer lost 8-4 vs. Alex Greenberg and Katrina Kostovic at second doubles.
Taking on the Tigers, Ithaca swept the three doubles matches and dropped only one set in winning all six singles matches.
Kusak knocked off Amelia Ying 6-0, 6-2 at the first flight, Dunn defeated Geanna Heaviland 6-1, 6-2 at second singles, and Ginster earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brianna Dimisko at third singles.
Blumenthal earned an 8-1 win over Marie Jubert in the fourth singles flight, followed by Shaffer's 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Alyssa Hering in fifth singles.
In the closest match, Grosberg dropped the first set to Maddy Price by a 6-4 score before rebounding to win the next two sets by scores of 6-1 and 10-5 to complete the singles sweep.
In doubles action, Kusak and Blumenthal teamed up for an 8-4 win at the first flight. Ginster and Shaffer defeated Dimisko and Hering 8-4 at second doubles, and Overholt and junior
Sydney Greenspan knocked off Jubert and Kelsie Redburn 8-6 at third doubles.
Ithaca is off for the next few weeks until hosting the University of Rochester at 12 p.m. on April 2.
