Pomona-Pitzer Drops Baseball, 10-4

CLAREMONT, Calif – The Ithaca College baseball team managed just four hits in a 10-4 loss at Pomona-Pitzer College to start its spring break trip in California on Sunday. Ithaca is now 2-4 on the season and will play six more games out west this week before returning to New York.

The Bombers fell behind, 5-0, after a six-hit second inning by Pomona-Pitzer. After a lead-off double, the Sagehens strung together two more hits and used a wild pitch to plate a pair of runs. A groundout pushed the third run across and then back-to-back singles capped off the inning.

Ithaca got one run back in the top of the fourth on a wild pitch. Junior Josh Savacool reached on an error and made his way to third on the play. Savacool would then score on the errant pitch to cut the deficit to 5-1.

Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead to 7-1 with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the fourth, but the Bombers answered with one in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Sam Little that scored Webb Little. W. Little started the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout.

The Bombers then closed to a 7-3 gap with another sac fly in the seventh. After freshman Andrew Bailey singled to start things off, he reached third on an infield error. Sophomore Jason Uliano drove in Bailey with the sac fly to right field.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Pomona-Pitzer regained its five-run advantage, 8-3, with a lead-off error and back-to-back singles which knocked senior Benji Parkes from the game.

Parkes took the loss in the contest in six-plus innings pitched and gave up 13 hits with a strikeout.

Ithaca loaded the bases in the ninth on two walks and a hit by pitch. A wild pitch started a quirky play, as the runners attempted to move up, but retreated to their respective bases. As the ball was thrown back to Pomona's pitch at home, he tried to throw out Ithaca's runner at first, but sent the ball into right field which allowed junior Ryan Henchey to score the final run of the game.

The Bombers' four hits came from Savacool, Bailey, W. Little and sophomore Domenic Boresta. Senior Trevor Thompson walked twice.

Freshman Josh Carney tossed the final two innings of relief and gave up two runs on two hits and three walks.

Ithaca takes on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tomorrow at 2 p.m. PST. Live stats and video will be available for tomorrow's contest.
