CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Ithaca College baseball team improved to 3-4 on the season as it held onto a 4-3 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (4-13) on Monday afternoon at Bill Acre Field in Claremont, Calif.
Ithaca put together a four-run inning in the top of the third on three hits, two walks and a passed ball. Junior
Trevor Thompson singled up the middle to push senior
Zach Cole home for the game's opening run. Cole reached on a double and moved up to third on an error off the bat of junior
Josh Savacool.
Freshman
Andrew Bailey then followed with a two-base hit to bring home Savacool and put the Bombers up, 2-0. A walk to freshman
Webb Little loaded the bases with two outs and a passed ball allowed Thompson to score the third run of the frame. With the bases still loaded, freshman
Sam Little drew a walk which brought home Bailey to cap off the inning.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice, and in the bottom of the fifth, the Staggs stroked back-to-back doubles to plate another run and pulled to within a 4-2 difference.
The Staggs plated one more run in the bottom half of the sixth on a double, throwing error and sacrifice bunt.
In the top of the ninth, the Bombers threatened to get a run back by loading the bases with two outs, but a groundball to second base kept Ithaca from scoring.
C-M-S started the bottom of the ninth with a bunt single, but sophomore
Tyler Hill induced a pair of fielder's choices and a fly out to cap off the complete game effort.
Hill scattered six hits over nine innings and gave up just one earned run. He also struck out two batters and issued one walk.
Fine Bombers tallied one hit a piece, led by a 3-for-4 day at the plate from Cole. Thompson, Bailey and S. Little drove in Ithaca's runs.
The Bombers and Stags square off again tomorrow at 2 p.m. PST for a nine-inning game at Bill Arce Field.
