Men's Soccer Settles for Draw on Senior Day

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team settled for a draw on Saturday afternoon as the Bombers tied Houghton College, 1-1, on a rain-soaked Carp Wood Field.  The tie, which was Ithaca's first draw of the season, moved the Bombers' overall record to 6-7-1 along with a 4-1-1 mark in conference play.  Houghton, which came into Saturday's contest atop the Empire 8 standings, moved to 9-2-4 and 4-0-2, respectively.

Prior to kickoff, the Bombers took a moment to honor the six seniors on the team including Sam Boylan, Andrew Coburn, Scott Halpern, Zach Jacobsen, Cody Kiss and Ellis Masterman.

The Highlanders held the advantage in shots, 25-15, and in corner kicks, 9-5.  Ithaca was led by Alexander Brosnihan's four shots while Boylan had three shots in total.  Anthony Smajlaj had two shots while Christian Shkreli, Nathan Schoen, Kevin Turi, Max Barish and Eric Hepler each took one shot apiece.

Houghton broke through in the 22nd minute after a shot ricocheted off the back of one of Ithaca's defenders and into the net to claim a 1-0 lead.

Ithaca remained in a one-goal hole until the 67th minute when Turi lined a pass to Brosnihan who caught Houghton's keeper too far outside his net to make it 1-1.

The Bombers had an opportunity to win the game late with a pair of corners and three shots on goal, but the game remained deadlocked as both teams prepped for overtime.

In the first overtime period, Houghton found itself in a one-on-one situation with Jacobsen, but the senior keeper stood tall for the Bombers and turned the shot aside to keep things even at 1-1.  The Highlanders delivered four more shots in the second overtime frame but were unable to net the difference-maker as the game ended in a draw.

Jacobsen moved to 6-6-1 on the season after making a season-high eight saves in 90 minutes of play.

The Bombers will wrap up the home portion of their 2016 campaign at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Rochester Institute of Technology at Carp Wood Field.
