ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team fell to Rochester Institute of Technology, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Carp Wood Field. The loss moved Ithaca's overall record to 6-8-1 while the Tigers improved to 5-8-3.
R.I.T. jumped out to a quick lead after the Tigers scored in the 11th minute when a through ball found its way past the Bombers' defensive line before being kicked into the far corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The visiting Tigers would double their advantage 14 minutes later after they earned a free kick from just past the midfield line after an Ithaca foul. The kick found its mark as R.I.T. headed the ball into the upper corner to take a 2-0 lead in the 24th minute.
Ithaca answered in the 35th minute as
Nathan Schoen's shot was turned aside right to
Sam Boylan who unleashed a strike into the back of the net to make it 2-1. Schoen was credited with an assist on the play.
Trailing by one goal in the second half of play, Ithaca looked to even the game as the Bombers put two shots on goal over the final 45 minutes of play, but it was not to be as the Tigers held on for the 2-1 win.
Dan Hinckley made his second start of the season in goal for Ithaca and was saddled with the loss. He made four saves in all.
The Bombers held a slim advantage in shots, 14-13, and took seven corners. Boylan took a team-high three shots while
Andrew Coburn and
Eric Hepler each took two.
The Bombers will conclude their regular season at 2 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Rochester to battle the St. John Fisher College Cardinals in an Empire 8 matchup. Ithaca's hopes to earn the top overall seed in the conference championship are still very much alive, however, the Bombers will need to beat Fisher and have Houghton tie Stevens on Saturday.
