MAHWAH, N.J. – The Ithaca College volleyball team won both its matches in the first day of the Ramapo Invitational on Friday night in Mahwah, N.J. Ithaca swept St. Joseph's-Long Island in the first match and then came away with a 3-2 victory over New Paltz in the night cap. The Bombers are now 10-1 on the season.
MATCH ONE: Ithaca 3, St. Joseph's-Long Island 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17)The Bombers never trailed in the match, and outhit St. Joe's, .200 to -.045. Ithaca notched 17 block assists in its opener to go along with nine service aces.
Senior
Dylan Gawinski-Stern surpassed 1,000 career digs in the match. Gawinski-Stern entered competition today with 990 digs to her credit, and finished the match with 17. She also added seven assists and a kill in the win.
Freshman
Hailey Adler led Ithaca's offense with eight kills on 19 attempts with six digs, two aces and two assists. Classmate
Amanda Cerruti was close behind with seven kills on a .417 hitting percentage. Cerruti also tallied a match-high five block assists.
Sophomore
Kayla Gromen dished out 25 assists with nine digs, six kills on nine swings (.667) and three service aces. Freshman
Kyle Dandrea also compiled six kills with four block assists and three digs.
Sophomore
Joelle Goldstein added five kills and three digs, while junior
Breanne Tuohy was a perfect 3-for-3 in kills in one set played. Sophomore
Izabella Mocarski scored with two aces and sophomore
Marlee Wierda contributed an ace, assist and dig in the match.
Freshman
Katie Evans had four block assists to round out Ithaca's opening win in the tournament.
MATCH TWO: Ithaca 3, New Paltz 2 (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-13)Ithaca faced its first five-set match of the season and prevailed over New Paltz,
despite being outscored, 109-101, to wrap up the first day of action. The Bombers hit .251 as a team, while New Paltz swung at a .313 clip. Ithaca benefitted from 10 service errors and six blocking errors by the Hawks.
In the three sets Ithaca won, the Bombers hit .320, but in its two losses, the team only produced a .149 hitting percentage.
Gromen, Goldstein and Adler all notched double-doubles in the win.
Gromen handed out a career-high 52 assists with 11 digs and three kills. Goldstein put down a season-best 17 kills on a .317 hitting percentage to go along with 16 digs, and Adler added 17 digs, 12 kills and three aces.
Evans also reached double-digit kills against New Paltz with 13, and started the match going a perfect 8-for-8 before committing an error. She hit .417 overall. Sophomore
Caroline Gerulskis was Ithaca's fourth player to compile double-digit kills with 10.
Gawinski-Stern added 17 more digs to her total to go along with six assists and an ace. Cerruti contributed eight kills in the match, while Wierda three aces and two digs.
The Bombers play two more matches tomorrow against Ramapo at 11 a.m. and SUNY Potsdam at 1 p.m.
