ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match with a 3-1 Empire 8 Conference victory at Elmira College on Tuesday evening. Ithaca is now 8-1 and 2-0 in the Empire 8 this season.
Ithaca fell in the first set, 25-20, and only led for a short stretch to open the match - from 9-8 to 11-10. After Elmira knotted the set up at 11-11, the Soaring Eagles would go on a 7-0 run to take control and eventually went on to build a 1-0 lead in the match. Elmira hit .250 in the set, compared to .194 for Ithaca.
The Bombers once again found themselves facing a large deficit in the second set at 17-9, but fought all the way back to tie the set up at 21-21. From there, Ithaca completed the comeback and took the second set, 25-23, to knot the match up at 1-1. Ithaca benefitted from five service errors by Elmira, including the set-clinching point.
After a 4-4 tie to start the third set, Ithaca went on a 13-6 run to build a 17-10 lead. Elmira brought things back to a 19-17 difference, only to watch the Bombers close out the set with six of the final nine points and win, 25-20.
Ithaca secured the match with a 25-15 win in the fourth set. The Bombers only trailed after the opening point of the set and outhit the Soaring Eagles, .172 to -.036.
Sophomore
Joelle Goldstein notched a double-double in the match with 14 kills and 16 digs. Goldstein hit .429 overall and also added three block assists. Freshman
Katie Evans also reached double digit kills with 10 on 20 swings and two errors (.400), and recorded four block assists.
Sophomore
Kayla Gromen dished out a season-high 42 assists to go along with seven digs and six kills. Sophomore
Caroline Gerulskis and freshman
Hailey Adler each tallied seven kills and three block assists. Adler also chipped in 13 digs.
Senior
Dylan Gawinski-Stern led all players with 20 digs and six assists from the back row. Junior
Breanne Tuohy contributed four block assists and two service aces in three sets, while freshmen
Kyle Dandrea and
Amanda Cerruti each had three kills.
Ithaca travels to the Ramapo Invitational for four matches on Sept. 18-19. The Bombers open with St. Joseph's-Long Island at 4 p.m. on the 18th and then take on New Paltz at 6 p.m. On the 19th, Ithaca plays Ramapo at 11 a.m. and Potsdam at 1 p.m.
