Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Four players scored in double-figures for Ithaca College men's basketball team as the Bombers opened the 2015-16 season with a 90-84 win on the road against Skidmore College in the Williamson Center.
As a team, Ithaca made 36 free throws, which marked the most in a single game since making 28 on January 4, 2013 against Alfred.
After taking a four-point lead over the first three minutes of play courtesy of back-to-back 3-pointers from
Marc Chasin and
Sam Bevan, the Thoroughbreds would battle back to tie the contest at 12-12. From there, Skidmore would open up its largest lead of the game, using a 17-7 run that lasted nearly five minutes to hold a 29-18 lead with 9:34 left in the first half.
As the opening stanza wore on, the tables would be turned, however, as Ithaca answered with 16 straight points including 12 from the charity stripe before a Skidmore lay-up halted the drought making it 34-31 in favor of the Bombers.
Ithaca continued to push the tempo, closing out the first half on an 8-4 run with
Joey Flanagan nailing four more free throws in the process to give Ithaca a 42-35 lead heading into the locker room.
Coming out of intermission, the Bombers would extend their advantage after back-to-back baskets in the paint by
Luke Cooper staked the visitors to a 17-point lead, 58-41, with 14:09 remaining in the contest.
Ithaca claimed its largest lead of the game at 8:33 when two more free throws from Flanagan put the Bombers up by 19 points, 73-54, but Skidmore would chip away, cutting the deficit to 10 points with 6:38 still showing on the clock.
A deep three by Bevan would extend Ithaca's hold to 13 points, but the momentum would swing back in Skidmore's favor after 11 unanswered points as part of a 14-2 run would bring the home team to within two points, 83-81, with just over two minutes to go.
After exchanging baskets, the Thoroughbreds would come to within one point, but that was as close as they would get as the Bombers closed out the game with five more free throws to hold on for the six-point win, 90-84.
Chasin posted a game-high 22 points in the win to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Flanagan added 20 points of his own after shooting 16-for-16 from the charity stripe. Bevan finished with 18 points after sinking a game-high four treys and
Peter Ezema had 16 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes.
The Bombers shot 36-of-46 (.783) from the line while converting 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. Defensively, Ithaca held Skidmore to 6-of-25 (.240) from three-point land while forcing the Thoroughbreds into 18 turnovers.
The Bombers will return to the hardwood at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to Scranton to face the Royals.
