ITHACA, N.Y. – Jess Demczar scored the game-winning goal in the final seconds of the second overtime period to lift the Ithaca College women's soccer team to a hard-fought 1-0 conference victory over the visiting Houghton College Highlanders on Saturday at a rainy Carp Wood Field.
With the win, Ithaca now sits at 2-0-1 in the Empire 8 standings and improves to 5-3-1 overall while Houghton falls to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.
Demczar's goal came with just 41 seconds left on the clock when
Holly Niemiec gathered a loose ball and crossed it into the box. Demczar connected with her right foot and skipped the ball into the left side of the net to give the Bombers the win.
Ithaca seemed to come to life in the final period after being outshot by the Highlanders 18-13 up to that point. The Bombers pressured the Highlanders' defense throughout the second overtime, taking four shots including a penalty kick that could have sealed the win if not for a great save by Houghton's goalie.
Beth Coppolecchia earned the win in net for Ithaca after making 10 saves in 100 minutes of action. The senior goalie has now reached double-digit saves totals in each of her last two contests.
Ithaca will look for its second straight win at 5 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to Oneonta to take on Hartwick.
