Volleyball Sweeps Hartwick and Fisher on Senior Day

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball tallied a pair of 3-0 victories over Hartwick College and St. John Fisher College in a home Empire 8 Conference crossover on Saturday in Ben Light Gymnasium. With the pair of wins, Ithaca is now 25-3 overall on the year and wraps up Empire 8 play with a 7-1 mark.

Immediately following the matches, Empire 8 Tournaments pairings were released, and the Bombers will take on Nazareth in the No.2/3 matchup at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m.

MATCH ONE: Ithaca 3, Hartwick 0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-19)

The Bombers rolled to an opening sweep of Hartwick, and outhit the Hawks, .369 to .023. Ithaca notched 41 kills with just 10 errors in 84 attempts. The .369 hitting percentage is a team-high this season.

In the first set, Ithaca hit .571, followed by .367 and .242 in the second and third sets. Hartwick swung at a .095 rate in the first set, and was held to .000 in the final two games.

Freshman Hailey Adler paced the offense with 10 kills on 17 swings (.529) to go along with a team-best nine digs, three aces and two assists. Sophomore Kayla Gromen swung at a .636 clip with eight kills in 11 tries, and dished out a match-high 28 assists with five digs.

Freshman Kyle Dandrea notched six kills on eight attempts (.625) in one set played, while classmate Katie Evans put down six kills in 10 attempts (.600). Dandrea also contributed three digs.

Freshman Amanda Cerruti tallied four kills, three block assists and a solo block, while sophomore Caroline Gerulskis added five kills and four block assists.

Senior Dylan Gawinski-Stern chipped in eight digs, three aces and two assists. Sophomore Joelle Goldstein finished the match with eight digs and one assist.

Sophomores Marlee Wierda and Izabella Mocarski registered five combined digs – three for Wierda and two for Mocarski. Junior Breanne Tuohy put down a kill with an assist and a block assist.

MATCH TWO: Ithaca 3, Fisher 0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-21)

Prior to the start of the match, Gawinski-Stern was recognized for her contributions to the Ithaca College volleyball program over the past four seasons. She has helped Ithaca reach Empire 8 Championship play four times and guided the Bombers to an ECAC Metro/Upstate Championship title in 2014. Earlier this season, Gawinski-Stern eclipsed 1,000 career digs and entered today's tri-match with 1,241 career digs.

She notched 22 digs in the match to lead all players and picked up two assists. Evans recorded 11 more kills in the win on a .429 hitting percentage, while Goldstein notched 10 kills with seven digs.

Cerruti swung at a .455 clip with six kills in 11 swings to go along with a pair of block assists. Gromen contributed a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs, and also put down three kills.

Dandrea added four kills and four digs, while Adler added four more kills with seven digs and two aces. Wierda scored on a pair of aces with four digs, and Mocarski chipped in an ace and a dig.

Gerulskis and Tuohy rounded out the action for Ithaca. Gerulskis picked up three kills and Tuohy turned away a Fisher attack with a solo block.

Ithaca improved every set in team hitting percentage - .190, .296 and .324 - while Fisher declined over the course of the match - .091, .037 and .028. 

The Bombers are back at home on Oct. 27 against Wells for a non-conference match at 7 p.m. The regular season concludes with three matches at Oneonta on Oct. 30-31.
