Ithaca Sweeps Houghton In Home Doubleheader

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team took two games from visiting Houghton Tuesday night, sweeping the Highlanders with 6-0 and 9-1 victories at Kostrinsky Field. The Bombers were originally scheduled to play Houghton at the end of March, but the games were postponed due to inclement weather. The sweep pushes the Bombers record to 13-5 overall, while Houghton falls to 0-20.

Game 1: Ithaca 6, Houghton 0
Senior Sam Bender picked up the win in game one, shutting out the Highlanders and recording six strikeouts in the complete game victory. Sophomore Casey Gavin recorded a RBI and paced the Bombers with three hits in three at bats, including a double. Freshman Jessie Fleck also had multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Ithaca struck first in the bottom of the second, as sophomore Erin McQuillan hit a sacrifice fly with runners at the corners to give Ithaca the 1-0 advantage. The Bombers scored again in the following frame on a Houghton error, putting the Bombers up 2-0.

Ithaca did most of its damage in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Fleck started the scoring, bringing home junior Francesca Busa on a single to right field. Senior Sydney Folk hit a single to put runners at the corners, before junior Monica Capolongo hit a sacrifice bunt to bring home the fourth Bomber run of the game. Gavin capped the inning with a single through the second base side, pushing Ithaca's lead to 5-0.

The Bombers added one more run in the sixth, giving Ithaca the 6-0 advantage. Bender did the rest in the circle, holding the Highlanders scoreless to give the Bombers a 6-0 win.

Game 2: Ithaca 9, Houghton 1
Sophomore Allison Macari earned the win in game two. She allowed just one earned run and picked up seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of play. Gavin, Folk and Fleck all picked up multiple hits in game two, with Folk recording two doubles to lead the Bombers in extra-base hits. Folk and Gavin tied for the team lead with two RBI.

Houghton picked up the first run of the ball game, crossing home plate once on two hits in the top of the first inning.

Ithaca responded with a monstrous bottom of the frame, scoring four runs on three hits. After reaching base due to an error in the outfield to open the inning, Busa moved to third on a passed ball. Fleck sent a double to right field in the following at bat, bringing Busa home to tie the game. After another Bomber reached base, Folk crushed a double to right field, scoring two more Ithaca runs. Folk scored on a wild pitch later in the frame, giving Ithaca the 4-1 lead.

The Bombers went up 7-1 in the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits and two errors before ending it two innings later. Ithaca finished off the Highlanders in the bottom of the sixth, as Gavin hit a shot to left field with two Bombers on base. Gavin's single scored both runners safely, giving Ithaca the 9-1 win.

The Bombers are back in action on Wednesday, April 9 in a road doubleheader against Buffalo State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
