14th-Ranked Ithaca Wrestling Defeats RIT 37-7

ITHACA, N.Y. – The 14th-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team won eight of 10 matches and scored a 37-7. Ithaca earned bonus points in five of its eight wins, two by pin, one by major decision and two by forfeit in

Ithaca captured the 125- and 133-pound weight classes by forfeit. In the first contested bout of the dual, RIT's Jake Sepor scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the third period and won 4-3 by decision over Adam Moser.

In the featured match of the night between two nationally-ranked wrestlers, Ithaca's Dan Pak (ranked sixth by the NWCA) scored an early first-period takedown to take a lead against RIT's third-ranked Brad Mayville and then rode out Mayville for the remainder of the period and built 2:39 of riding time advantage.

Pak deferred for the second period and Mayville chose down, which allowed Pak to build the riding-time lead to more than four minutes. Pak scored three near-fall points and then Mayville escaped, which sent Pak to the third period with a 5-1 lead. The wrestlers started neutral for the final two minutes, and Pak scored a late takedown plus the riding time for an 8-1 decision win.

Ithaca continued to build its team lead with back-to-back wins by pin. Nik Hansen held an 11-2 lead in his match at 157 and then ended it with a pin in 5:52. Nick Velez wasted little time in finishing his opponent at 165, with a pinfall victory in 39 seconds.

RIT got back on the board at 174 with a major decision victory by a 13-0 score by Tory Cain.

The 184-pound bout went in Ithaca's favor as Steven Sabella scored a takedown in the first and second periods and went on to a 6-2 decision victory with riding time.

Ithaca's Greg DuVall got an early takedown and near-fall points at 197 to take a 5-0 lead. He won by major decision by a 14-4 score. The heavyweight bout between Ithaca's Dan Glinko and RIT's Sam Weinger was a high-scoring bout that went to Glinko by 15-8 decision to wrap things up.

The Bombers improve to 2-0 in dual matches on the season and return to action Saturday at Oswego. RIT was competing in its first dual match of the year and is 0-1.
