Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ithaca College men's soccer program dropped a 3-0 decision to Stevens Institute of Technology in the Empire 8 Conference Final on Saturday in Hoboken, N.J. Ithaca was the No. 2 seed, while Stevens was No. 1 and claimed its eighth consecutive Empire 8 title.
Ithaca took four of the first five shots in the contest and put three on goal in a seven-minute span, but all were saved by Stevens' goalkeeper, Mike Renna. Sophomore
Sean Forward attempted the first shot of the match at the 39:22 mark of the period and then classmate
Aziz Farouk sent a header towards frame 6:04 later. The Bombers' final on target shot in that span came from senior
Casey Williamson with 32:23 left on the clock.
Any momentum that Ithaca produced from that run was quickly erased as Stevens' Carson Pryor drilled home the early go-ahead goal in the 16th minute (29:03 on the clock) off a pass from Nick DeFelice to give Stevens a 1-0 lead.
Stevens tacked on another goal late in the first half off the foot of Jay Mikula with 4:03 left before intermission to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Ducks would flip their deficit in shots over the first 13 minutes of action into a plus by the break at 8-6. Both teams were awarded four corners in the opening 45 minutes.
Out of the break, Stevens kept the pressure up and tried to put another one on the board in the 11 minutes on a pair of on target shots, but senior
Jordan Gentile was there to turn away both tries.
After Gentile made two more saves in the 69th and 70th minutes, Stevens finally put one past Gentile to put the game out of reach at 3-0 with just under 16 minutes left in regulation.
Gentile finished the match with six saves. At the other end of the field, Renna stopped five shots for Stevens.
Ithaca was held in check all second half, as it was only able to get off two shots. Stevens attempted 16 shots in the match, compared to eight for the Bombers. The Ducks also held a 7-4 advantage in corners.
The Bombers end their 2014 season with a 6-8-3 record.
On Nov. 12, the Empire 8 released its all-tournament team. Seniors
Brandon Glass,
Casey Williamson and
A.J. Wolfanger were Ithaca's representatives.
