Defense Shines Again As Ithaca Football Beats Union 17-3

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College football team used a strong defensive performance to post a 17-3 win over Union on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field. Rakim Jones ran for two touchdowns and tight end Jared Prugar had a career-best receiving day with 165  yards on six receptions. The Bombers improved to 2-0 on the year while Union fell to 0-2.

Ithaca built a 14-3 lead at the half on two rushing touchdowns by senior running back Rakim Jones. Jones scored from two yards out in the first quarter and added a four-yard TD carry in the second quarter.

The Bombers extended their lead on their first drive of the second half. Ithaca went 81 yards over 11 plays and capped the drive with a 20-yard field goal by Garrett Nicholson. Neumann was 4-for-5 on that drive for 73 yards passing, including strikes of 22 and 25 yards to Prugar.

Ithaca's defense held Union to just 222 yards and three points in the game, which came on a 28-yard field goal late in the second quarter. Jake Santora led the Bombers with 14 tackles in the game including three tackles for loss. The Bombers totaled four sacks, two of which came from Chris Williams. Brian Hardenberg had 10 tackles.

The Bomber secondary broke up five passes on the afternoon and held Union to 15 completions in 29 attempts for 140 yards.

Jones finished the game with 44 yards on 17 carries. Tommy Padula had 12 carries for 43 yards. Phil Neumann was 11-for-20 for 219 yards.

Ithaca begins Empire 8 play next weekend with a noon game at Buffalo State.

BOMBER NOTES

* Punter Mike Lopez had punts of 63 and 61 yards in the first half. He is the first punter in Ithaca history to have two punts of 60 or more yards in a single game.

* Brian Garvey intercepted a Union pass in the fourth quarter, the sixth of his career.

* It was the first time that Ithaca has held its opponent to fewer than 10 points in back-to-back games since the 2008 season when Ithaca defeated Utica 42-7 on Oct. 25 and followed that with a 37-8 win over Springfield on Nov. 1.

* Max Rottenecker sent three of his four kickoffs into the endzone for touchbacks.
