High-Scoring Split For Bomber Softball Team At Alfred

HORNELL, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College softball team slugged six home runs and totaled 23 runs in a doubleheader split at Alfred on Friday evening. The Bombers (8-6) won the first game 15-5 in eight innings, and Alfred (7-9) pulled out a 9-8 decision in the second game. Both teams are 3-1 in Empire 8 play. The Bombers host Houghton in a doubleheader Saturday and Buffalo State at Kostrinsky Field for two games on Sunday. Both doubleheaders begin at noon.

The Bombers had a 5-1 lead erased in the late innings, but scored 10 times in the top of the eighth to win the opening game. Ithaca had four home runs in the contest, including two in the decisive eighth inning.

Third baseman Molly O'Donnell doubled to start the eighth-inning rally and hit a three-run homer later in the same inning. It was part of a 2-for-4 game for O'Donnell, who had three RBIs and a run. Shortstop Francesca Busa was 4-for-6 in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Designated player Brooke Powers was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. First baseman Sydney Folk, outfielder Jen Biondi, and second baseman Julianne Vincent all had two hits each. Ithaca totaled 17 hits in the game.

Starting pitcher Sam Bender worked seven innings and picked up the win, her fifth of the season. She had one strikeout and one walk and allowed eight hits. Laura Quicker pitched the bottom of the eighth inning in relief and had one strikeout.

The Saxons scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh in a back-and-forth second game. The Bombers held a 4-1 lead after two and a half innings, but Alfred scored six times in the bottom of the third to go ahead. Ithaca answered with three runs in the fourth to tie the game 7-7. Alfred scored once in the sixth, but the Bombers tied it in the seventh on a leadoff homer by Sydney Folk.

Folk finished the game 3-for-4 with a triple and a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored. Francesca Busa was 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored. Casey Gavin, Brooke Powers, Rachel Dell'Orto and Kelly Robichaud also had hits for Ithaca.

Laura Quicker pitched four effective innings and took the loss in relief. She allowed three runs, one was earned, on four hits and she struck out three Saxons. Alison Macari started for the Bombers and worked 2.2 innings.
