ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College baseball team (14-4) saw an early lead slip away, but pulled out a 7-6 victory over Oneonta (6-12) on Wednesday afternoon at Freeman Field. It was Ithaca's 10th consecutive victory as they now move on to Empire 8 play this weekend with home doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday against Stevens Institute of Technology.
The Bombers took advantage of some early fielding miscues by the Red Dragons and built a 5-0 lead over the first three innings. Oneonta responded with five runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the score.
Shortstop
Tim Locastro singled and later scored on an error in the first inning for the Bombers. He then tripled in a run in the second inning. The third-inning runs came in on RBI hits by
Luke Stark,
Matt Connolly and
Andrew Turner.
With the score tied 5-5 in the fourth, Locastro walked and stole second. He moved to third on a fly out then came home on a single down the third-base line by
Colby Gee. The Red Dragons tied it in the top of the fifth, but the Bombers got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth when Connolly walked and stole two bases, and came in to score on an infield hit by Locastro.
For the game, Locastro went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. He is now batting .456 for the year. Turner was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Jimmy Wagner came on in relief during the fourth inning and picked up the victory. He was effective for 3.1 innings, allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts. He worked out of a bases-loaded, no outs jam in the fifth by allowing only one run to score on a sacrifice fly. He faced another bases-loaded situation in the sixth and ended the inning with two strikeouts to strand all three runners.
Matt Colbert pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit and one walk to earn his first save of the season.
The game was played in windy conditions with temperatures in the 20s.
