ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca men's soccer team (3-1-4) put the first blemish on the record of visiting Scranton (7-0-1) following a 0-0 tie Tuesday evening at Carp Wood Field. In the process, the Bombers extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with three wins and four ties. It's the team's longest streak without a loss since the 2005 team closed the season with an 11-0-1 mark in its last 12 games.
Much of the game was played in the midfield, and Ithaca held the majority of possession in the first half. Scranton held the ball for most of the second 45 minutes but couldn't break through. Ithaca freshman goalkeeper
Kenny Chapman earned the shutout, the first of his career, and made six saves. It was the first time all season that the Royals were held without a goal.
One of the Bombers' best scoring chances came in the closing minute of the second overtime period, when a ball fell to sophomore
Tim Goldman at the top of the penalty area. His hard shot on target was deflected by a Scranton defender and forced a difficult save. That resulted in a corner kick, but a last-chance shot by
A.J. Wolfanger was wide of the net.
Prior to the game, 1972 alum and former Ithaca men's soccer player Rusty Flook was recognized for his recent donation of a new scoreboard at Carp Wood Field, the home of the Ithaca men's and women's soccer programs.
Ithaca returns to action Saturday as the Bombers wrap up a four-game homestand by returning to conference play against Alfred in a 1 p.m. game at Carp Wood Field.
