New Paltz, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball team (5-4) dropped two straight-set decisions to Johnson & Wales (2-9), 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17), and tournament champion Clarkson (9-3), 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17), on day two of the Hawk Invitational hosted by New Paltz at the Hawk Center.
Against the Wildcats, senior
Marissa Weil recorded 12 kills and junior
Syline Kim added six to lead the Bombers. Freshman
Dylan Gawinski Stern posted 26 assists.
Defensively, junior
Justine Duryea had a team-best eight digs and freshman
Christine Flannery added seven.
Johnson & Wales took an early 7-2 lead in the first. The Bombers snuck within one on five occasions, but the Wildcats claimed the first, 25-19. The second was tied at 14-14, but Johnson & Wales led the way down the stretch for a 25-20 second-set victory. The Wildcats posted an 11-3 opening run en route to securing the match in three with a 25-17 final frame win.
In the day's second match,
Duryea and
Weil led the Blue & Gold with seven kills apiece on
Gawinski Stern's 15 assists.
Weil had eight digs and
Flannery seven, while sophomore
Abbie Hutchinson posted three block assists.
The Golden Knights snapped a 5-5 tie in the first with a 6-0 run as they pieced together a 25-19 victory. The second stint was tied on seven occasions, lastly at 12-12, before Clarkson tallied five unanswered to gain momentum as it took a 2-0 series lead with a 25-17 win. Much like the second, the third was knotted early before the Golden Knights rallied late to claim the straight-set win.
The Bombers will open conference play on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Hartwick at 10 a.m.
