ITHACA, N.Y. -- The #19 Cortland Red Dragons (18-4) rallied for a 7-5 eight-inning win over host Ithaca College (7-10) in the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader then completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
In game one the Bombers forced extra innings with a two-out RBI single in the seventh by freshman catcher
Monica Capolongo. Capolongo's hit, a line drive over third base, brought home freshman shortstop
Francesca Busa – who hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a fly ball by sophomore
Sydney Folk – with the tying run.
After the Red Dragons scored twice in the top of the eighth, Ithaca brought the tying run to the plate following a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Lindsey Johnston but Cortland struck out the next two hitters.
Ithaca twice took a two-run lead. The Bombers scored a run in each of the first two innings with the first coming home on an outfield error and the second on a single by left center fielder
Rachel Dell'Orto that scored junior first baseman
Carianne D'Alessandro
Cortland tied the game in the top of the fifth and the Bombers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Dell'Orto tripled and scored on a ground out by sophomore second baseman
Julianne Vincent. Busa followed with a double (one of her three hits) and scored on a single by junior third baseman
Molly O'Donnell.
Capolongo also finished with three hits and Dell'Orto added two.
