#19 Cortland Posts Softball Sweep

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The #19 Cortland Red Dragons (18-4) rallied for a 7-5 eight-inning win over host Ithaca College (7-10) in the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader then completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

In game one the Bombers forced extra innings with a two-out RBI single in the seventh by freshman catcher Monica Capolongo. Capolongo's hit, a line drive over third base, brought home freshman shortstop Francesca Busa – who hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a fly ball by sophomore Sydney Folk – with the tying run.

After the Red Dragons scored twice in the top of the eighth, Ithaca brought the tying run to the plate following a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Lindsey Johnston but Cortland struck out the next two hitters.

Ithaca twice took a two-run lead. The Bombers scored a run in each of the first two innings with the first coming home on an outfield error and the second on a single by left center fielder Rachel Dell'Orto that scored junior first baseman Carianne D'Alessandro

Cortland tied the game in the top of the fifth and the Bombers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Dell'Orto tripled and scored on a ground out by sophomore second baseman Julianne Vincent. Busa followed with a double (one of her three hits) and scored on a single by junior third baseman Molly O'Donnell.

Capolongo also finished with three hits and Dell'Orto added two.

Vincent had two of Ithaca's four hits in the second game and her second home run of the season accounted for the Bombers' run.

The Bombers open Empire 8 play Friday with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader against Utica at Kostrinsky Field.
