Newport News, Va. – The Ithaca men's lacrosse team (4-0) defeated host Christopher Newport (3-4), 13-3, on Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated in its 2012 campaign.
Following a 1-1 stalemate at the end of the first period, Ithaca blasted five goals in the second to lead, 6-1, at intermission. The Bombers maintained its dominance in the third, netting six scores to CNU's one. Each squad scored once in the final frame.
Senior
Tom Mongelli led the Bombers with five goals, while classmate
Brian DiBetta and sophomore
Pat Slawta each tallied twice. Junior
Connor Lowe had a team-high two assists and was one of four Bombers to add one goal apiece.
Sophomore Brandaon Henne won five faceoffs, while
DiBetta added four faceoff victories for the Bombers who outshot the Captains 52-30 and had 21 groundballs to CNU's 14.
Senior
Brendan Green improved to 4-0 on the season with a 13-save performance, while holding Ithaca's opponent to its lowest goal-count since an 18-1 victory over Alfred on April 27, 2011. Freshman
Mac Davis saw 4:51 in goal and made three stops.
Mongelli opened all scoring at 10:50 of the first on a
Ryan Burns assist, though the Captains answered at the two-minute mark to tie up the action.
DiBetta kicked off six unanswered Bomber goals with a score at 12:35 of the second stanza. Senior
Billy LaPerch found Mongelli at 8:05 before
DiBetta netted his second on a
Jimmy Ryan assist to take a 3-1 lead. Thirteen seconds ticked away before
Lowe fed
Slawta for a man-up goal which was followed by a
James Manilla score less than a minute later. Freshman
Dan Sclafani assisted
Manilla to give the Bombers a 6-1 advantage at the half.
DiBetta won the faceoff to open second-half play which led to a
Mongelli goal on a
Slawta assist at 14:12. CNU ended Ithaca's six-goal streak with a score at 13:38, but Ithaca surged to score another six straight.
Manilla assisted
Mongelli and
Lowe went unassisted over the next 45 seconds to pace Ithaca to a 9-2 lead.

Mongelli as the Bombers powered to a 12-2 lead at the end of the third.
Sophomore
Joe Perkins recorded Ithaca's final goal at 7:19 of the fourth on an assist from freshman
Steve Danylyshyn. The Captains finalized all scoring at 13-3 at the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter.
The Bombers will next travel to Oneonta on March 21 for a 4 p.m. contest.
