CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball team (8-9) dropped a straight-set decision at #11 Cortland (24-2), 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-12), on Tuesday evening at W.T. Corey Gymnasium.
Ithaca was led by senior
Marissa Weil with nine kills. Freshman
Christine Flannery added four and sophomore
Abbie Hutchinson three.
Freshman
Carly Garone set for 16 assists and added five digs, while freshman
Dylan Gawinski Stern dug out seven times.
Hutchinson led defensive efforts at the net with three blocks.
Cortland posted a 5-1 run to open action, but Ithaca responded to cut within 7-6. Cortland scored 13 of the next 15 points to power to a 20-8 lead. The Red Dragons went on to claim a 25-12 victory.
Ithaca put up a fight in the second stint. The frame was tied on five occasions, lastly at 8-8 before Cortland posted a 12-2 run for a 20-10 advantage. The Bombers answered with a 9-1 run of their own on the serves of
Garone and
Weil to cut within 21-19, forcing a Red Dragon timeout. The host squad returned to the hardwood and tallied four straight to take a 2-0 series lead with a 25-19 second-set win.
Cortland opened the third stanza with six unanswered before taking a 16-4 lead. The Bombers tallied three of the next four, but Cortland outlasted the Blue & Gold with a 25-12 final.
The Bombers return to action on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13 when they host the Ithaca Invitational.
