Bombers Split at Empire 8 Crossover, Defeat Alfred & Fall to Elmira

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ithaca College volleyball team (8-8, 2-3 Empire 8) swept Alfred (1-17, 0-4 Empire 8), 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-11), and dropped a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-16) match to Elmira (9-9, 4-1 Empire 8) on Saturday at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Against the Saxons, senior Marissa Weil hit .700 with 14 kills on 20 attacks to lead the match. Freshman Carly Garone led action with 22 assists and classmate Dylan Gawinski Stern chipped in five. Freshman Emily Kovach served up four aces.

Defensively, freshman Christine Flannery dug out eight times and junior Justine Duryea seven.

The Bombers posted a season-best .529 hitting percentage in the second set and hit for .407 in the first. The first set was competitive early before the Bombers pulled away with a 7-2 run to post a 25-17 victory. Ithaca opened the second with a 14-4 streak and never looked back, taking a 25-11 second-set win. An 8-1 stretch put Ithaca ahead early in the final frame. The Saxons pulled within 16-9, but Ithaca put away nine of the final 11 points to win 25-11 and claim the straight-set win.

Against the Soaring Eagles, Flannery and Duryea tallied seven kills each and Weil six. Garone posted 20 assists to lead the Bomber offense. Weil had 13 digs.

Elmira opened the match with an 11-5 run en route to a 25-13 first-set victory. The Soaring Eagles mirrored their first-set performance with a solid start to the second. They went up 20-8 before a 7-1 Bomber run to cut the score to 21-15. Elmira went on to claim the second, 25-16. The third stanza was knotted at 5-5 before the Soaring Eagles took an 11-6 advantage. Ithaca brought the set to 16-15, but Elmira posted nine of the final 10 points to secure the victory.

The Bombers travel to nationally-ranked Cortland on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 pm.
