ITHACA, N.Y. – The #4 Ithaca College women's soccer team (15-0-1, 6-0-1 Empire 8) clinched the top seed in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament with a 6-0 shutout of Alfred (6-9-0, 1-7-0 Empire 8) on Saturday afternoon at Carp Wood Field. Eight Bombers were honored on senior day as Ithaca improved upon its school-record setting start to the season.
The Bombers outshot Alfred 32-0 and held a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks. Six different Bombers scored as they put away two goals in the first frame and four in the second.
Graduate student
Megan Trager got the scoring started for the Bombers 24 minutes into action on a pass from junior
Ellyn Grant-Keane.
Trager's one-time shot found the back of the net for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. The Bombers scored again just five minutes later as freshman
Kelsey King placed a shot into the corner of the net for her fourth score of 2012.
The Bombers scored three goals over a span of five minutes early in the second. The first came on a corner kick from senior
Julie Winn. She sent the kick to senior
Rachael Palladino who headed the ball into the net. Her 11th score of the season,
Palladino moved within three goals of the school record 61 scores and within 11 of the school-record points total of 148. The assist was
Winn's team-leading ninth of the season. She is tied for a school-record 26 career assists and for fourth-most season assists all-time at Ithaca.
Junior
Jackie Rodabaugh pressured the Alfred goalie en route to a 4-0 gap at the 54-minute mark. Four minutes passed before
Winn bent a corner kick into the net to make the score 5-0.
With eight minutes lingering in the game sophomore Samantha Thompson delivered a cross to the feet of freshman
Libby McNamara who finalized all scoring at 6-0. The goal was
McNamara's second of the season, while it was
Thompson's first assist.
Ithaca goalkeepers did not face a shot on goal, and combined to tally the team's 12th shutout of the undefeated season. Senior
Becca Salant played the first 62 minutes for the Bombers. Junior
Becca Lewis and freshman
Beth Coppolecchia split the remaining time in net.
The Bombers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. in non-conference play against Oneonta.
