Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball team (11-11) defeated visiting Oneonta (16-10), 3-1 (27-25, 16-25, 25-23, 29-27), Tuesday evening at Ben Light Gymnasium as head coach Janet Donovan recorded her 600th victory at the helm of the Ithaca volleyball program. Donovan has 624 total victories during her 22-year career as a head coach, including 24 amassed at Keuka College during the 1990 season.

The night also served as senior night for lone Bomber senior Marissa Weil. With the win, Ithaca improved to 52-9 all-time against Oneonta, including a flawless 22-0 record against the Red Dragons in Ben Light Gymnasium.

Weil led offensive efforts with a match-high 21 kills, while freshman Christine Flannery posted a career-high 13 kills. Flannery and classmate Carly Garone each served up a trio of aces. Garone set for 39 assists and led the Bomber defense with 17 digs. Freshman Dylan Gawinski Stern added 16 digs and Weil posted a Bomber-best four blocks.

The match opened in back-and-forth fashion as the first set featured nine ties. Ithaca looked to claim the first with a 24-19 edge, but the Red Dragons secured six consecutive points to lead 25-24. Ithaca pieced together three unanswered for the 27-25 first-set victory.

The Red Dragons dominated action in the second as they rattled off a 9-4 run to lead 17-9. The Bombers cut within 23-16 but back-to-back Oneonta points led to a 25-16 final and a 1-1 series.

Oneonta led the third early, though Ithaca responded to knot action at 9-9. A 7-2 streak led to a 16-11 Red Dragon advantage, but Ithaca answered with a 10-3 of its own. The Bombers outlasted the visiting squad for a 25-23 win and a 2-1 series lead.

The fourth and final frame featured a 7-0 Ithaca stretch to open action. The Red Dragons surged to cut the deficit to just two, 13-11. The Bombers maintained a slight lead, but Oneonta put up a fight down the stretch. Ithaca surrendered match-point on four occasions before a Justine Duryea kill and a Syline Kim ace polished off the win.

The Bombers return to action on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20-21 at the Empire 8 Crossover at Utica. Ithaca will face St. John Fisher Saturday at 7 p.m. and Utica and Nazareth Sunday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
