ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball team (10-11) dropped a 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-8) decision to Potsdam (18-11) and lost a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-17) match to Fredonia (14-12) on day two of the 2012 Ithaca Invitational in Ben Light Gymnasium. Freshman setter
Carly Garone was named to the Ithaca Invitational All-Tournament Team.
In the day's first match, senior
Marissa Weil swung for 17 kills and junior
Justine Duryea nine.
Garone set for 33 assists. Freshman
Dylan Gawinski Stern served up four aces and
Duryea and freshman
Christine Flannery added three apiece. Defensively,
Gawinski Stern had 13 digs and
Duryea 11.
Ithaca claimed the first set, 25-22. The Bombers got out to an 8-1 start and powered to a 17-9 gap. The Bears surged to cut within one twice, at 18-17 and 23-22, but a
Syline Kim kill and a block by
Abbie Hutchinson and
Flannery put the Bombers up, 1-0.
Potsdam claimed the second 25-23 and the third 26-24. Ithaca again posted an early lead in the second, 10-3, before an 8-1 run knotted action at 11-11. The score bounced back-and-forth before the Bears snapped a 22-22 deadlock with three of the final four points to enforce a 1-1 series. The third opened in Potsdam's favor, 6-1, though the Bombers answered cutting within one, 16-15. Ithaca went ahead, 22-19 on
Kim's serve, but the Bears outlasted Ithaca for a 2-1 lead.
The Bears dominated the final frame, 25-8. They powered to a 9-1 advantage and never looked back, Ithaca brought action to 14-6, but Potsdam secured 11 of the final 13 points for the victory.
Flannery and
Weil each tallied seven kills in the second match of the day to lead the Bombers' offensive efforts.
Garone again set for a team-high 20 assists.
Flannery added 11 digs and
Gawinski Stern nine.
Fredonia opened action with a 7-2 run, never allowing Ithaca closer than four points the rest of the way. Ithaca crept within 19-15, but the Blue Devils claimed six of the last seven for the first-set win. The Bombers responded to a 5-1 deficit in the second taking a 9-7 lead, though the Blue Devils rushed to a 17-9 edge on their way to a 2-0 series lead. Ithaca held an early lead in the third, but Fredonia would answer to take a double-digit advantage at 16-6. Ithaca pulled within 24-17 with four unanswered but the Blue Devils managed its fourth straight-set victory of the weekend with a 25-17 third set win.
The Bombers return action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. hosting Oneonta for senior night.
