Springfield, Ill. -- The Ithaca College wrestling team (8-2) placed fourth at the
National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals, dropping two matches Sunday. The Bombers lost 32-12 to second-ranked Wartburg (4-0) in the semifinal round and dropped a 21-13 contest to fourth-ranked Wisconsin-LaCrosse (14-2) in Sunday's third/fourth-place bout. Junior
Jules Doliscar (Dix Hills/Trinity), who's ranked third nationally, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the two-day tournament; he won all four of his matches and capped his weekend by beating Division III's top-ranked wrestler.
Wrestling at 174 pounds,
Doliscar raised his season record to 22-2 (10-0 in dual matches), winning four times. In Saturday's opening round he needed just 1:21 to pin his opponent, then he recorded a 13-3 major decision over the nation's fourth-ranked wrestler. On Sunday
Doliscar picked up his 14th pin -- the most in Division III -- 2:14 into his match against Augsburg, then knocked off Wisconsin LaCrosse's defending national champion (and the nation's top-ranked wrestler), winning 4-1.
Doliscar is the second straight Bomber to earn Most Outstanding Wrestler at the National Duals, following
Blaine Woszczak's selection last year.
Three other Bombers were winners against Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Senior heavyweight
Matt Mahon (Brighton/Rochester) picked up a major decision, outscoring his opponent 16-4.
Mahon, who's ranked seventh nationally, is now 14-5 this season with a pair of major decisions. His career record stands at 79-31.
Wrestling at 165 pounds,
Nick Sanko (Hamburg Area/Lenhartsville, Pa.), a graduate student who's ranked 10th, posted a 2-0 decision to raise his record to 8-2.
Sanko, who won three of his four bouts over the weekend, is 6-1 in dual matches and owns a career mark of 44-21.
Sophomore
Dominick Giacolone (Cato-Meridian/Cato) also won three of four matches at the tournament. Against Wisconsin-La Crosse,
Giacolone was a 3-1 winner at 125 pounds. He's 13-7 this year (5-3 in duals) and 24-18 as a Bomber.
In the Augsburg match -- featuring the nations's second and third-ranked teams (who were also seeded second and third at the 16-team tournament) -- all of Ithaca's points came from pins.
In addition to
Doliscar's fall, senior
Seth Ecker (Pottstown/Pottstown, Pa.) was also a winner by pin. Wrestling at 141 pounds -- one of three bouts that featured two nationally ranked wrestlers -- he recorded his fifth fall of the year, needing 5:59 to pin Will Keeter.
Ecker is ranked third in the country and Keeter is fifth.
Ecker, who lost 5-3 against Wisconins LaCrosse to the nation's top-ranked wrestler, is now 18-4 on the season (8-1 in dual matches) with a 96-20 career record. His 30 career falls are fifth all-time at Ithaca.
