Bombers Drop Regular-Season Finale at #7 Stevens, 17-5

Hoboken, N.J. – The Ithaca men's lacrosse team (9-7, 5-3 Empire 8) dropped its regular-season finale to seventh-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology (15-1, 7-1 Empire 8), 17-5, on Saturday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Bombers will next travel to top-seeded and second-ranked RIT on Friday, May 6 for an Empire 8 semifinal contest.

The Ducks opened with four consecutive goals, but Ithaca surged with back-to-back tallies in the second period to bring the game to 4-2. Stevens went on to tally three more in the second to close the half with a 7-2 edge. Though Stevens opened the second half of action with a goal just one minute into play, the Bombers netted a pair and held the Ducks scoreless throughout the rest of the period to bring their deficit to four, 8-4. Stevens would score the first of the fourth, but Ithaca again answered for a 9-5 game. The Ducks netted eight unanswered to run away with the lead and finalize all scoring at 17-5.

Junior Devin Weinshank (Long Beach/Long Beach) led the Bombers with a pair of goals and one assist, while senior Jay Lucas (Fox Lane/Bedford Hills) added one score and an assist on the day. Junior Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) and senior Michael Silipo (Williston Northampton/Deerfield, Mass.) were the other Bomber goal scorers.

Junior Brian DiBetta (John Jay/Katonah) won nine faceoffs for Ithaca and joined freshman Andrew Kristy (Fairport/Fairport) in recording a team-high four ground balls.

Senior David Gal (Loomis Chafee (Conn.)/Amherst, Mass.) suffered the loss in goal having made 10 stops.

Trailing 4-0, Silipo opened scoring for Ithaca at 9:24 in the second period on an assist from sophomore Andrew Bruce (De La Salle/Lafayette, Calif.). Lucas backed it with an unassisted score at 7:56. The Ducks closed the period with three straight for a 7-2 halftime advantage.

Stevens netted the first of the third stint, but Weinshank found Mongelli and drove to goal himself to bring the game to 8-4 at the end of the stanza. The Ducks again were first to find the back of the net in the fourth and final frame. Weinshank capitalized on a pass from Lucas to score the Bombers final goal at 14:02 before Stevens put the game away with eight straight.

Stevens, who snapped Ithaca's three-game winning streak, outshot the Bombers, 49-37, picked up 23 ground balls to the Bombers' 20 and won 14 of 24 faceoffs.
