Bombers Drop Doubleheader After Two Late Cardinal Rallies

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The baseball team (11-12, 4-5 Empire 8) lost Friday's doubleheader to visiting St. John Fisher (19-6, 8-2 Empire 8). The Cardinals won game one 4-1 and won game two 5-4. Junior second baseman Matt Keller (Pelham/Pelham) had two of Ithaca's three hits in the opener; freshman third baseman Colby Gee (Dryden/Freeville) and freshman shortstop Tim LoCastro (Auburn/Auburn) had two hits apiece in the nightcap.

Ithaca was held to three hits in the opener. The Bombers scored their run in the fourth to tie the score; after junior Michael Rosenbaum (Fayetteville-Manlius/Fayetteville) and Gee both drew four-pitch walks to open the inning, a fly ball by senior first baseman Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeman) and a ground out by junior left fielder Taegen Barresi (Lansing/Lansing) brought home the tying run.

Sophomore Pat Lemmo (Westhill/Syracuse) held St. John Fisher to one hit over the first five innings before the Cardinals broke through for three sixth-inning runs.

In game two, St. John Fisher broke a 1-1 tie with four sixth-inning runs then held on as the Bombers scored three times in the bottom of the inning to pull to within a run and put two runners on base in the seventh.

Ithaca's rally in the seventh started when Gee drove in a pair of runs with a one-out double. LoCastro's single scored Gee and put the tying run on first but the Cardinals retired the inning's final two batters. In the bottom of the seventh, Keller led off with a single but St. John Fisher threw out Ithaca's pinch-runner on a stolen base attempt. Wolf was hit by a pitch (for the second straight inning) with two outs to bring the winning run to the plate before the Cardinals closed out the game.

The Bombers had taken a 1-0 lead in their first at bat when Wolf doubled in Barresi.

Junior Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham, Mass.), a two-time Empire 8 all-star closer, made just the third start of his career and struck out eight batters (two short of his personal high) in five innings of work.

The teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Freeman Field.
