Ithaca Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Union, 11-7

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca men's lacrosse team (5-2) dropped an 11-7 non-conference game to visiting Union (4-2) on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.

After a 4-4 tie at the seven-minute mark of the second period, Union netted four straight scores for an 8-4 lead early in the second half. Ithaca brought the game within one on a trio of goals, but the Dutchmen rattled off three straight to close out the game and snap the Bombers' three-game winning streak. The physical game featured 16 penalties and 14:30 of time served.

Senior David Gal (Loomis Chafee (Conn.)/Amherst, Mass.) made 14 saves in goal for the Bombers, for his sixth double-digit save performance of the season.

Junior Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) led the Bombers with two goals and an assist, senior Jay Lucas (Fox Lane/Bedford Hills) recorded one goal and dished out a pair of assists, while four other Bombers posted one goal each.

Junior Brian DiBetta (John Jay/Katonah) won 11 of 20 faceoffs as Ithaca edged Union, 11-10 in faceoff victories.

Union jumped out to an early 3-1 advantage, broken up only by Lucas' unassisted score at 7:04 in the first. Senior Michael Silipo (Williston Northampton/Deerfield, Mass.) went unassisted at the 12-minute mark of the second period before Mongelli capitalized on a DiBetta feed to knot the game at 3-3. Union answered before Mongelli found junior Devin Weinshank (Long Beach/Long Beach) to again bring the game to a stalemate.

The Dutchmen scored a pair of goals at the end of the second quarter to lead 6-4 and opened the second half netting another two to lead 8-4 at 9:26 in the third.

Senior Ryan Lowe (Fairport/Fairport) assisted Mongelli at 6:45 before freshman Jake Long (Upper Dublin/Ft. Washington, Pa.) and Lowe each used Lucas feeds to score man-up goals and bring the game within one, 8-7, with 32 seconds remaining in the third.

Union dominated the fourth quarter, scoring three goals and collecting 10 ground balls to the Bombers' one, en route to finalizing all scoring at 11-7.

The Bombers will next travel to play Cortland on Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m.
