#13/11 Bombers Suffer First Setback of Season, Edged 4-3 by Misericordia

ITHACA, N.Y. – The 13th/11th-ranked Ithaca women's soccer team (7-1-2) suffered its first setback of the season to visiting Misericordia (5-3-2), 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Carp Wood Field.

Junior Julie Winn (Sutton/Sutton, Mass.) recorded a career-high tying two goals and added an assist but it wasn't enough as the Cougars scored three consecutive to take a lead that the Bombers were unable to reverse.

The teams were knotted 1-1 at the break, but the Cougars opened the second period with a pair of scores to take the lead indefinitely.

Ithaca outshot Misericordia 29-25, including a 16-10 gap in the second half, while also holding a 6-3 corner kick advantage.

Winn tallied the Bombers' first score in the 25th minute firing a free kick into the top left of the goal to put Ithaca up, 1-0, but Misericordia answered 10 minutes later to instill a 1-1 tie at intermission.

The Cougars opened the second frame netting two within two minutes of each other.

The Bombers surged, though 23 minutes ticked off the clock before it would become a one-goal game. Winn placed a penalty kick into the bottom right-hand corner of goal, following a Cougar handball in the box, to bring the score to 3-2 in the 80th minute.

Sophomore Ellyn Grant-Keane (Lansing/Lansing) looked to tie the game at the 78-minute mark as she laced a shot high of the Cougar keeper that hit the crossbar and bounced back into play.

Misericordia maintained composure and put away its fourth score with 8:12 lingering in the match taking a 4-2 lead.

Winn sent a long shot to goal in the 89th minute that junior Rachael Palladino (Lansing/Lansing) converted into a goal from the left post finalizing all scoring at 4-3. Palladino now stands alone with the second-most career points in Ithaca history (98).

Junior Becca Salant (Holliston/Holliston, Mass.) made eight stops in goal for the Bombers in 61 minutes of action. Sophomore Becca Lewis (Hall/West Hartford, Conn.) relieved Salant making two saves in the final 21 minutes of play.

The Bombers will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 against Empire 8 opponent Alfred at noon.
